white papers

Another reading assignment full of help and guidance in writing our next project. I especially liked the last article, WhyWhitePapersDontWork.pdf. This article was simple, and to the point, just how I like it. It is especially helpful to know that writing the paper in a comprehensive manner and avoiding all the nerdy tech talk can make or break the paper. I will definitely refer back to the readings when writing the paper.

Sorry this is late, I tried to access the site wednesday around 6:00 pm and was unable to due to the site being down. I also just moved into a new apartment and just now got the internet hooked up yesterday and also had a busy work schedule with both jobs the past couple days, so this was first chance to get on a computer, so again I apologize.

Cover Letter and Resume

Here they are, my Cover Letter and Resume

Cover Letters Reading Response

The cover letter readings were full of helpful information. The information practically spells out what exactly to include in a cover letter, and especially focuses on including what the employer wants to hear and how to figure out what exactly that is. I’m not too fond of this idea however, it sounds too much like blowing smoke up the employer’s ass, but I guess if it works then you got to do what you got to do; and I won’t lie and say that I’m not guilty of trying it.

T - Letter

I have attached my T-Letter. This is the first time I've even heard of a T-Letter so I'm curious as to whether you would recommend a lot of detail about experience in the table; or whether it would be better to try and keep it a quick to the point table. Either way, here is my current T-Letter.

Resumes

I’ve always heard that employers only have a short look at resumes and generally skim through, but I never realized how bad it really is. I mean, 30 seconds or less is a very short time to review a resume and pass judgment. However given the circumstances of such a high quantity of resumes I understand why the process is so brief, I know I wouldn’t want to take the time to thoroughly read each and every one. These articles, especially the first two really helped me grasp what exactly a resume needs to do in order to grab the attention of the human resources rep.

Usability Test

Last night I took my instructions on how to operate a nail gun with me to work and asked a co-worker to try them out. Unfortunately this was not my ideal unexperienced audience because he already knew how to shoot the gun quite well since it is a very important part of our job. However I work is the only place where I have access to such a nail gun. Any ways, I asked him to just simply follow my instructions and he was able to operate the gun without a problem. His only suggestion was that I comment on how to comfortably hold the gun.

Ch. 24 Response

This chapter covered the importance and power of using images and pictures to support writing. I for one am an impatient reader and when it comes to the newspaper I see first hand how important pictures can be. I definitely do not read the newspaper cover to cover, instead I skim through looking for pictures that catch my interest and then read those articles. Also from majoring in MET I have taken several classes which include lab sessions and unfortunately with the lab sessions come lab write ups.

Ch. 12 Response

Sorry this is late, but I ordered the book online and just received it last night, however I found this chapter to be a good read. I wish I would have seen this chapter prior to the summer because it would have been very helpful in updating my resume and writing a cover letter when looking for summer work. If I would have read this chapter several months ago maybe I would have been able to land a better summer job, perhaps making more and not having to work third shift. However at least this should be helpful in future job searches.

Nail Gun Instructions

I intend to write step by step instructions how to operate an air powered nail gun. I plan on cover topics such as, oiling the gun, connecting the air hose, loading the gun with nails, shooting the gun, and trouble shooting. Also I plan to include important safety warnings with supportive pictures. The instructions will be guided mostly toward users with little to no experience with such a nail gun. These instructions will most likely be two to four pages in length with pictures included. My information will come from both common product literature and daily work experience.
