Welcome

If you're enrolled in ENGL 421Y, Section 03, with Ryan Weber, you've come to the right place. This website will be our meeting place for the Summer 2008 semester. The site is designed to make your learning experience a valuable one. Students enrolled in this course will meet in this common space to share feedback on their writing, discuss course content, and collaborate on writing projects. As we gear up for the start of the semester, please note the following so that you're prepared and that your experience in the class is a positive one.

Employment Project Grades

Today I e-mailed back employment project grades and comments. The quality of the resumes and cover letters was higher than my usual classes, and I was pleased to see so many students taking their job searches seriously. You are free to revise your resume and cover letter and submit them by July 25th. Tomorrow, I am going to remove all the resume and cover letter submissions from the turn-in blog to avoid any violations of privacy (attachments are only visible to registered members of the site, but better safe than sorry). If you need those files, please save them before tomorrow (July 14).

Google Docs

Part of Project 3 is figuring out Google Docs, but I wanted to provide you with some direction as you are using the software. I have also attached the instructions created by the two students who chose Google Docs for Project 1. The software is generally easy to use, though I anticipate some difficulties that I'd like to address here. Remember, the challenges you face in using the software may inform the white paper itself (though please keep the white paper third person).

Google Docs FAQ

Post any questions about using Google Docs here. I invite all students to contribute to answering questions about the use of the software, especially those who produced instructions on Google Docs.

Project Groups

Below are the groups for Project 3. Groups were assigned alphabetically based on the roster. Emails will be sent today to help each group establish contact, but students can use any medium of communication to complete the project, including e-mail, IM, Google Docs, or the course site, including the wikis provided below, where any member can add content. I have also added categories for each group. Please contact your group members today (Thursday, July 10) to begin discussing the course project. I will provide further instructions on Google Docs and white papers tomorrow (Friday 11).

Final Employment Project and Groups

Just a reminder that final employment projects are due tonight by midnight. Please post them as attachments to a comment in the Project 2 Turn-in blog along with a short description of the job applied for and attachments. I will e-mail out group assignments tomorrow for Project 3 so you can begin working together. Also, revisions for the Instructions Project 1 final instructions should be posted here.

Introduce Yourself

To get started in English 421Y, please introduce yourself in a comment below. Please include the following information:

describe where you are from
give your course of study and year
talk about your career goals
tell what you would like to get out of this course
share at least one thing personal about yourself (a hobby, your favorite sport, a favorite activity, etc.

Also, if you haven't added an avatar (a photo or image of yourself on your profile), now might be a good time to do so. Welcome again to the class!

FAQ

This is the FAQ for the class, designed to answer questions you have about course content or the site. If you have a question, please post it in the comments below, and I will answer it as soon as possible.

Are there specific times when we will meet together as a class by logging on at the same time? No. All of your work in 421Y is asynchronous. You can complete projects and readings at your own pace as long as you complete them by the deadline. Once you start meeting in groups, your group may decide to work through chat programs or Google docs at a pre-established time.
