Group 1 - Story
The following are paragraphs composed by each of our group memebers. We hope to use these as the base for the supporting points of our white papers.
Supporting independent business in local areas is not only an issue of morality, it can put money back into the community. In a study by Civic Economics in 2007 of two paper suppliers in Arizona, it is clearly shown that revenue is recirculated locally by a number three times greater when compared to an outsourced or corporate conglomerate. This means that the money put into local businesses will support the community at a much higher rate than one that is not locally driven. By keeping a larger portion of money in one's surroundings instead of sending it to no man's land, an environment is created where business and more importantly, people, can flourish.
An article from a current student at Harvard University states some ideas we really latched onto. His name is David Kornhaber and he has written several pieces of literature that have been given several awards. I really like the way he wrote his thoughts on independent bookstores. He has some really good facts as well to go along with it. He talks about how not only independent bookstores are in a crisis but writers in general are suffering from the loss of independent bookstores. I just thought this was a good article for everyone to read to get an idea of what independent bookstores and the people that back them feel about this topic. It goes along with what Charles is saying about passion. He writes:
“Nor could he have imagined an age during which some of the most respected publishers and booksellers in existence would close within years of one another. But this is the world in which we live: a world in which the economic ascendancy of book superstores like Barnes & Noble and Borders has produced a crisis in the literary world.”
For marketably, we found some sites that helped us come up with some ideas of how to emotionally attach with those. From an article, we found that a major pull for independent bookstores is their uniquness and genuity. Unlike major chain bookstores, when you walk into a privately owned one, you know that the people operating it really care about literature and are extremely knowledgable in the subject. If you need suggestions on what book suits your needs, you know you will always be treated individually and helped in a personable and sincere manner. Another way to get the bookstores name out, is to join associations made for indpendent business owners. The following website we found is a great example of a group of people and independent businesses coming together to show support and get their names out: http://www.independentnepa.com/index.html.
Peer Review on Group One's Proposal
You guys have a good start. It seems like you are all working well by what you have came up with so far. I would suggest proof reading your draft and final project before submitting it. I would also suggest that when you do your draft, you go back through and change words like “I think” to “we think”. It is a team project, and although you split it up into parts, you want to make sure the paper flows well and doesn’t sound like individual work since it is a team effort. You didn’t attach the annotated bibliography, so I am curios to what kind of sources you all used. I saw one website listed at the bottom, but that was it. I like how you guys quoted different people. I think this will help you build credibility when you write the white paper. The audience will know that you looked for other sources and opinions. It also makes your paper better-rounded. Overall, you guys seem like you are on the right track! Good job!

I think your groups has come up with some really good ideas. I agree with Sarah. The fact that you quoted different people will give real credibility to your project. Your group seems to have similar flow of thought with your ideas of: money back to the community, writers suffering from the loss of bookstores, and the emotional attachment needed to keep bookstores. I did not read anything about feminine bookstore, so it will be interesting to to read your project that details more independent bookstore problems and how they relate to the community.
I look forward to reading what you have to say!

You guys have a good start! It looks like you are going to be discussing some good areas. I like the direction you are taking the marketability of the stores. You may also want to look into providing some marketing solutions for the businesses that will help them capitalize on what they do well in order to keep them in the customers mind.
Overall I like what I see and I will be looking forward to seeing what you paper turns out. Good luck!

You guys have some great stuff so far, especially the quote you used. There are a lot of facts to support your arguments and supporting bookstores. I like the resources you guys used Harvard is the standard for credible sources and I like what you guys have done so far. You can add more information about feminist bookstores, but for the most part it is good.

Looks like you guys have been working hard. This looks like the facts will go well together well and I agree with the other people in that the quote really hits home what you are trying to get across. It is phrased really well and will give the rest of your story credibility.

Independent bookstores contributing to and giving back to the community is a really good point. I didn't think of this until I started doing my own research. This can help people and businesses flourish. The fact that these bookstores are going out of business is very similar to music stores that are going out of business. Internet scamming is growing at an enormous rate every day. I like the quote you used from David Kornhaber, “Nor could he have imagined an age during which some of the most respected publishers and booksellers in existence would close within years of one another. But this is the world in which we live: a world in which the economic ascendancy of book superstores like Barnes & Noble and Borders has produced a crisis in the literary world.” It is sad, because this is the world we live in and I don't see it getting better anytime soon. It looks like you are off to a great start.
