Questions for Response
1. What can the writer do to make the resume better tailored to the specific job being applied for? Not much, you did a good job expressing how your skills can better the business.
2. Is the layout and design pleasing to the eye? Make at least one suggestion for improving it. The layout is a little plain to the eye. Having said that I think that it is straight forward and easy to read. Also, I think that your address is a little hard to read. You should try putting it off to the side of your name, with your email address right under it.
3. Does the resume fit comfortably within the page (as opposed to being squished in or stretched out)? What can the writer do to improve it? The resume fits cleanly into the page.
4. Is it easily readable (no confusing fonts, clearly marked sections)? What improvements can be made? There are no confusing fonts. The sections run together just a little bit. There needs to be more distinguished sections.
5. Does it use typography (including headers and bold and italics) appropriately and effectively? Yes, the correct use of bold letters and italics are used correctly.
6. Is the most important information located on the left side of the page and near the top whenever possible? Identify at least one part that could be better placed. Yes, there are none that could be better placed.
7. Does the content of the resume support the objective (if there is one)? Explain. Yes, the content of the resume supports the objective.
8. Is the resume too short? Where can it elaborate? Job skills? Responsibilities? Education? The resume content amount is just right. The activities part of the resume is a little vague.
9. Is material sequenced in order of importance and relevance? Yes, they are.
10. Do bulleted items begin with action verbs? Are list items ordered in terms of importance? Yes, all of the bulleted items start with an action verb and all are listed in sequence of importance.
11. Does the resume avoid generalities and focus on specific information and professional terminology? It could use a little bit fancier lingo in order to show a higher level of professionalism, however, the content is solid.
12. Does the resume pass the Quadrant, Column, Squint, and Distance tests (See attached document below for help with these tests)? Explain how the author might make improvements based on your test results. Yes. However, the bulleted items emphasizing experience could use a little makeover in order to keep the readers attention.
13. What other observations can you make about the resume? It is a solid, clean resume, all it is in need of is a little bit more visual stimulation in order to keep the readers attention. All in all, I thought it was a good resume.
Thank you for the Comments
Thank you so much! How do you think I should add more visual stimulation because I definitely found this to be the hardest thing to accomplish without distracting from the actual information on the page...
Resume Peer Edit
1. What can the writer do to make the resume better tailored to the specific job being applied for?
I think you did a good job showing how you work experience relates to the position you want to obtain at Kelly Services. In your object you might want to be more specific with the job you want to obtain at Kelly Services.
2. Is the layout and design pleasing to the eye? Make at least one suggestion for improving it.
At first glance the resume appears to be a little confusing. You may want to consider left indenting you bulleted its in the experience section
3. Does the resume fit comfortably within the page (as opposed to being squished in or stretched out)? What can the writer do to improve it?
The experience section appears to be a little spaced out. Again you may want to left indent in the experience section.
4. Is it easily readable (no confusing fonts, clearly marked sections)? What improvements can be made?
The dates which you were employed at each job are a little hard to read. You may want to consider bolding these items to make them more visible.
5. Does it use typography (including headers and bold and italics) appropriately and effectively?
Headings do not really stand out from the rest of the text. You might want to use a different text for both the headings and the rest of the text. Or you could just increase the size of the font.
6. Is the most important information located on the left side of the page and near the top whenever possible? Identify at least one part that could be better placed.
It was hard to determine if the most important information was located on the left side of the page near the top. You might want to try to define the different sections of the resume more clearly. Again the education section is very important so you may want to go into more detail in this section.
7. Does the content of the resume support the objective (if there is one)? Explain.
Yes, I think you work experience and activities show how you would be prepared for a position with Kelly Services.
8. Is the resume too short? Where can it elaborate? Job skills? Responsibilities? Education?
The only section I think is to short is the education section.
9. Is material sequenced in order of importance and relevance?
Yes, all of the material is sequenced in order of importance.
10. Do bulleted items begin with action verbs? Are list items ordered in terms of importance?
Yes the bulleted items begin with action verbs, and the items are listed in terms of importance.
11. Does the resume avoid generalities and focus on specific information and professional terminology?
This resume avoids generalities. You may want to use more descriptive action verbs.
12. Does the resume pass the Quadrant, Column, Squint, and Distance tests (See attached document below for help with these tests)? Explain how the author might make improvements based on your test results.
Quadrant: Yes
Column: Yes, on the left side
Squint: Yes
Distance Tests: For the most part
13. What other observations can you make about the resume
Your resume has lots of good info, but you may want to consider restructuring the education and experience sections.
Agree
Hey, thank you so much for your comments! Actually I completely agree with you that the education section needs a little revising, I wasn't sure if I should include my GPA since it is only a 3.2 and it was suggested to put only 3.5 or higher. What do you think? Also I could have added classes that were relevant to the job but there wasn't enough room and I felt that the experience was more important in this particular case.
GPA
3.2 is still pretty impressive. Plus, you should figure out what your Major GPA is. If it is better, then you can list it instead.
Ed's Critique
1. What can the writer do to make the resume better tailored to the specific job being applied for?
Simply put, your objective statement is much too long. The word "progressive" means almost nothing. The word "superb" also means almost nothing because it is your opinion and your reader will dismiss it as such. "Creative integrity" means almost nothing. See if you can cut this objective statement in half, if not more. Keep it simple and concise. Remember - you can tell them more about yourself when you get the interview, so you don't have to pack it all in here.
2. Is the layout and design pleasing to the eye? Make at least one suggestion for improving it.
The middle column is distracting. You should consider moving the middle column to just right of the headings. From there you might move both margins in a bit.
3. Does the resume fit comfortably within the page (as opposed to being squished in or stretched out)? What can the writer do to improve it?
Stretched out. See comment #2.
4. Is it easily readable (no confusing fonts, clearly marked sections)? What improvements can be made?
Since the bullet points are so far away from the heading, the grouping strategy is ineffective. Also, the objective statement is tough to read because it is all italicized.
5. Does it use typography (including headers and bold and italics) appropriately and effectively?
Your font size should never be smaller than 11 pt. Some of your text is 10 pt. and is hard to read.
6. Is the most important information located on the left side of the page and near the top whenever possible? Identify at least one part that could be better placed.
Your organizational strategy here is strong.
7. Does the content of the resume support the objective (if there is one)? Explain.
See comment #6.
8. Is the resume too short? Where can it elaborate? Job skills? Responsibilities? Education?
Your education section is a little bare. Relevant courses? GPA?
Also, you should seriously consider merging the "Computer Skills" section into your "Education" section because your computer skills are not unusual. At any rate, it is unnecessary to mention "(both PC and Mac)
9. Is material sequenced in order of importance and relevance?
Yes. This was thoughtfully done.
10. Do bulleted items begin with action verbs? Are list items ordered in terms of importance?
Your verb structures are excellent. The only one I have a problem with is "Worked to develop" Why use two verbs? Did you work to develop, or did you develop? It is confusing.
11. Does the resume avoid generalities and focus on specific information and professional terminology?
phrases like "creative projects" are vague. What WERE they?
12. Does the resume pass the Quadrant, Column, Squint, and Distance tests (See attached document below for help with these tests)? Explain how the author might make improvements based on your test results.
Quadrant: Yes.
Column: No. The items under 'Activities' are on a different alignment than the resume's bullet points. Stay consistent.
Squint: No. The white space under the headings is distracting.
Distance: No. The middle column destroys a sense of grouping.
13. What other observations can you make about the resume?
As mentioned above, you should treat the items under "Activities" as bullet points and align them the same way that the bullet points above are aligned. Having that said, the bullet point alignment is the weakest part of this resume. Move them over to the left so that they are under the headings but indented a little. Currently they do not look like they are part of the section that they are in, if that makes any sense! Let me know if you have questions.
