Instructor Blog #3: Resumes

As I read your blog I came across this, "However, your audience (the HR person who will be reading your resume) will spend 10-30 seconds reading it! All that work for 10-30 seconds. How frustrating." Quickly I gave thought to this and was awestruck at how fast the opportunity to impress the audience can pass. I guess I am being naïve by asking, but here it goes. Why, if the company is looking for a quality applicant to interview, would they spend a mere 10 seconds scanning (not reading) a resume? It seems to me that if the company were serious about hiring a qualified applicant, they would spend more time researching qualified applicants by allotting more time to actually read a resume. I guess that in hindsight of asking this question I can see that the best applicant will naturally grab your attention. This also ties in with the visual element of a resume. You stated how in the best resumes, design is invisible. I liked the idea of this as I read the blog. It really hit home with me for some reason. Through this comment I know, in my own way, how I want my resume to feel. It is important that the resume provides a feeling rather than a mere graphic design. Anyone can produce a resume with a graphic, but not everyone’s resume will provide this feeling I am talking about. This is one way for me to help my resume stand out from the rest.
