GRIFFIN Work Blog Week #8

This week was full of revisions for our group. We had to put the finishing touches on both the flyer and the brochure. This week we looked at the client feedback and went from there. We were able to change some images and reformat the text on both or brochure and flyer. This week I also had the opportunity to complete the activity report for my group. I simply described the progress my group made, and the goals we had for the upcoming week. By Wednesday we put the final touches on everything.

According to the Gantt chart that was created by my group, this week I was supposed to revise the brochure that was submitted as Draft 1. To revise the original brochure that was submitted I looked at the feedback document that our group was given. In the changes that I made I deleted some images, rearranged some text, and change the font on the majority of our text. Upon submitting the changes that I had made to the class website for Draft 2, I checked my email and one of my other group members had already submitted Draft 2.

I think that the 5 Minute Brochure Design Trash Test was a way for me to honestly critique the brochure that my group created. I had a difficult time scoring our brochure in some areas, but this is what I came up with. Appeal to emotions (+), be professional (-), be personal (+), achieve readability (+), speak the language (+), lead with benefits (+), have a single message (-), focus on a product or service (+), make an action call (-). After adding up the numbers our brochure ended up with 3 (-)s, which means that a few changes need to be made.

After reading Chapter 24 in the Thomson Handbook I learned how my group can improve our flyer and brochure in the upcoming weeks. Chapter 24 is all about the importance of visual context. The goal of our brochure is the make people interested in the Tantalus Group. The chapter explains how persuasive visual images can be. I think our group did a god job of representing the Tantalus group in our brochure. After looking at the pictures that were provided for us I got a sense that the Tantalus group puts on plays that are dark and provocative and on some levels maybe even a little demented.

I was assigned to group #4 with Katie, Kelley and Melanee for the service learning project. This week there was minimal communication between my group members. I think the lack of communication was largely due to the fact that everyone was putting the finishing touches on their corporate communication projects. I think the bulk of the conversations happened on Friday. Melanee emailed everyone about 9:30 and let us know what was going on with Gantt chart. I looked over the chart, and I thought she did a really good job. I then submitted the chart.

The brochure that I found on the net is titled HIV and Aids in America. I chose this brochure because it does not conform to the brochure guidelines that are spelled out in chapter 25 of the Thomson Handbook. The first mistake the designer's of this document made was trying to cram too much text onto the center spread. The TH made it clear that a brochure should not be overloaded with text. A brochure is something that should be inviting. If I open a brochure and it is filled with long sentences, I probably won’t read it.

I found a really cute video made by displaced jetBlue customers on youtube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=SOo-tG9q2h0&feature=related The video is a seven minute documentary of four friend’s journey from New York to Sacramento. The four friends end up stuck in JFK and O’Hare airports for 2 days. At one point they actually sat on a plane for 8 hours, and they still did not make it home. The friends endure long lines, hotel stays, and lost luggage before 2 of the friends are lucky enough to get a flight home.
