Our group had a very successful and smooth last week to the Service Learning Project. These past two weeks have been fairly identical for me. After receiving feedbacks from Mr. Plough and Joanna Lind I worked on adjusting the flyers. Most of the suggestions were moderately easy to fix, but I still had difficulty converting both of the flyers into pdf files. I spent a lot of time working on making the flyers presentable in a pdf form. I was in constant communication with Michael and Phil this week through instant messaging.

This was a productive week for me and the rest of my group members. Since my main responsibility is to work on the flyers that is what I mainly concentrated on this week. After reviewing the suggestions to improve the flyers, I took those into consideration and made changes to them. There was nothing major to change on the flyers, but I feel all of the small changes made a big difference. Even though Phil and Michael are in charge of the brochure, I also had some input on revising it and what I felt would make it better.

I feel that the 5 Minute Brochure Design Trash Test is very useful for this project and comes at the right time to help all of the groups out. After completing this test I noticed my group’s brochure could still use a little bit of adjustment and fine tuning before the final submission. For appealing to emotions I gave our brochure a (-). I struggled on this one, but came to the conclusion that since I could not decide, I would assume we are lacking in this area. Our brochure portrays the Tantalus Theatre Group through images and pictures, but really does not strike an emotional appeal.

I feel that I had a really productive week working on the Service Learning Project. I was responsible for writing and submitting the group activity report for the first week. After I wrote the activity report I emailed it to Phil and Michael to look over and revise before emailing it to the professor. Our group has decided that it is a good idea to send each other a copy of what we are going to submit before we actually do. This is to make sure that everything is included and is correct. After I submitted the activity report I started working on the fliers.

After reading both chapters in The Thomson Handbook I feel that I have learned some more information that will help our group revise our brochure and fliers. I think that Chapter 24 emphasizes the importance of visual context really well. I feel that I have a better understanding of how persuasive pictures and images can be. I felt that the Project Checklist on page 569 really brought all the important points and guidelines together. I think that images can really grab the audiences’ attention, and it is important that they are then drawn into the content of the brochure or flier.

I have been assigned to Group 5 for the Service Learning Project. I realized that we only had three members to our group so I brought that to the attention of the other group members. I think that this gives us an advantage as well as a disadvantage. It is going to be a lot easier to communicate with the whole group because there is one less person to try to contact. Unfortunately this also means that we will all have to work a little bit harder to get everything done in the same amount of time. We have been communicating effectively using mainly our wiki page and a little bit through email.

I found the information in Chapter 25 really interesting and worth my time. I have always had an interest in graphic design, but I have never actually read an article about the subject. When I looked for a brochure online, I searched for a pamphlet relating to animals so I would be interested in the information and design I was reviewing. I found a pamphlet from PETA in India discussing the issue of how animals are treated in zoos. The pamphlet can be found at http://www.petaindia.com/campaigns/pdfs/Indian-zoo-leaflet.pdf.
