CHIERO Work Blog Week #8

This Wednesday, our final draft was due for the Service Learning Project. After reading our client’s comments on our flyer and brochure, I knew my group needed to buckle down and really get to work. As disorganized as our group started, we were able to complete the project on time. As for me, I tend to stress out about the little things in life. I am sure I pestered most of my group with all the emails I sent out to them. When I would think of something that specific group members needed to work on or remember, I would shoot them an email stating what needs to be done.

I found the “5 Minute Brochure Design Trash Test” very beneficial. I agree that when creating a brochure, it is crucial to make a favorable impression with your design and structure. I feel that our brochure does not appeal to emotions. Taking a look at the second draft of our brochure, I found that it doesn’t strike an emotional chord as it should. Our ground needs to find a way to reach out to people’s hearts by connecting them to the message we are trying to portray.

CHIERO Work Blog Week #6

This week my group was able to excel in terms of completion. However, much of the material was completed at the very last minute. Although we were able to get the brochure done in time, I feel my group needs to set up a much better way to communicate, so one person isn't left with all of the work. I do not like waiting around my computer hoping that someone will email me with the information I need.

After reading the Chapters 24 and 37, I’ve learned a lot on how to better shape our draft in the future. Chapter 24 emphasizes the importance of visual context extremely well. I never knew that persuasive pictures and images were so crucial. I think that our group’s brochure definitely directs the reader’s eye to the most important information by our use of design elements. I believe we conveyed the same tone throughout our entire brochure by keeping a professional and artistry focus in mind.

When I read the deliverables for this Service Learning Project, I was worried it would be hard to communicate with my other group members. However, I would have to say that our group, Group # 1, is off to a really great start. We have been communicating effectively through email, which seems to be working out very well. We started emailing right away and handled our issues in the beginning. Originally, I was going to complete the Group Activity Reports weekly as one of my tasks in this project.

While reading Chapter 25 in the Thompson Handbook, I was given some valuable information to help correctly create our group’s brochure and flyer. I learned a lot from reading the entire section about typography. I didn’t know how effective typography was in the production of brochures. I understand the importance of using different fonts for text and headings. For example, I agree with the effective aspects of repetition in writing. No one wants to review a brochure or flyer and feel completely confused. I don’t even spend the time to glance at brochures that are all different colors.
