HERMAN Work Blog Week #8

kaherman's picture

This being the final week of the course, a lot of work was done. Although a lot of work was done for the project this week, it was mostly touching up revisions and making sure our documents were what the client wanted. Pictures were one thing that our brochure had some difficulties in. Before the revisions were made, we only had pcitures from one of the plays and that made Tantalus look like a "one man show". At first we were not able to open up pictures to get more of a variety, but eventually Kelley and I were able to incorporate different pictures to make Tantalus look more dynamic.

There was a lot that was accomplished this week with our group, especially with the first revisions of the draft. In addition to researching the Tantalus group for information to be included on the brochure and flyer, I also started to help Kelley with the brochure. After reading the peer comments and instructor comments, I realized that we had a lot of work to do and it would be best if two people worked on the design for the brochure. We have a good basis for the brochure, but there are many changes that need to take place.

The 5 minute trash test was a very useful critique for our brochure. The way this test was desinged made it much eaiser to point out specific aspects of the brochure and rate them as opposed to just looking at it as a whole. Here is the scoring that I used for our brochure- Emotional Appeal (-) Be Professional (-) Be Personal (+) Achieve Readability (+) Speak the Language (+) Lead with Benefits (+) Have a Single Message (-) Focus on a Product or Service (+) Make and Action Call (-). Our brochure has more than three minuses which means we still have a lot of work to do.

HERMAN Work Blog Week 6

Since this was the first week of actually getting started, our group got a lot accomplished this week. I was in charge of the research part of the project so this most of the week consisted of me researching and compiling information. This task was not that difficult because the Tantalus website was a really good source of information. There was a lot more about this group then I had anticipated and a lot of it was very interesting. I was suprised to see how many shows and benefits they had put on in the past as well as some coming up in the future.

Reading Response Week 6

With our brochure and flyer only at the first draft stage, I found chapter 24 and 37 to be very informative. Chapter 24 was basically all about photographs and illustrations and their deeper meanings when it comes to using them with an audience. It described how visuals can be used to create a bigger meaning for the readers by where they are placed, how they are portrayed, and simply what the picture is. Since our assignment is to create a brochure and flyer for a theatre, I immediately expected everything to look dramatic.

I was assigned to group 4 for this service project. Since this project just started, we have not done that much yet. I was the first group member to write on the wiki and initiated the contact information from gorup members through that. We are using the wiki as well as email to continue communication. Currently, we are in the process of assigning tasks to group members based on their skills and preferances. I am excited to start this project and feel that I am ready to handle the challenge of only communicating with my group via internet.
