The end of the semester

Well, we made it. It has been a pleasure watching your compositional skills improve over the course of this semester. You are a very bright and ambitious group of people and it has been rewarding to help you get to the next level. Online courses are not easy; they require an unusual amount of self-starting, diligence, and TIME. You should be proud of your accomplishments in this course. It is important to mention that the overwhelming majority of content on our course website has come from all of YOU through your comments, blogs, and wiki's. Thank you for helping to make this course website a more useful tool with your input, and thank you for your hard work this semester. Remember, excellence is in the DETAILS. Good luck in the future.

Just a few more days left...

Before you call your project finished, you should attend to a few tasks:

  1. Make sure that you can open your files on a Mac and a PC. If it looks different or won't open on one of these platforms, that's bad news.
  2. Print out all documents, both in black & white and color. It's important to know what your documents will look like under these conditions. Often colors can look really different on a computer vs. on the page.
  3. Be certain that your documents are not altered when converted to PDF.
  4. There is not room for even ONE misspelled word or critical error in these documents, so make sure they are flawless!
  5. Keep communicating with your group.
  6. Read the Week 8 calendar page.

Compliments and some more font advice

eplough's picture

After reading through your reading responses, I just wanted to say how impressed I was. In just seven short weeks, you all have clearly come a long way. You are thinking strategically about the minute details of composition, both visual and textual, which is immensely gratifying for me to see. Moreover, every reading response - and even the comments to those posts - were articulate and interesting. It is nice that I don't have to worry about whether or not you all are on the right track - clearly you are. Thank you all so much for your hard work.

Also from reading your responses I have noticed that there is considerable interest in font choice. I urge you to check out the OWL's Using Fonts with Purpose. If you scroll to the bottom of this page you will see that there are four highly useful pages concerning this issue. After you read these pages, your strategic ability regarding font choice will skyrocket.

Corporate Communication Project and some Font advice

eplough's picture

I have finished grading the Corporate Communication Project. Everyone should have gotten their Project grades back, so please email me if you haven't received yours yet. Also, I thought I'd suggest to all groups to browse the internet for fonts. Don't use the normal shmormal stuff! For example, this site has more than 8,000 fonts to choose from, including 150 horror-related fonts. I found this site by googling "font." This site was just the first one that shows up, but there are hundreds and hundreds of font sites. Check them out!

***Important Service Learning Project Update***

Due to logistical difficulties, we are no longer working with the SHARP program that was previously listed on the Project Details page. I have changed our client to Tantalus Theatre Group, a non-profit theatre company out of Chicago. The Project Details page will be updated frequently over the next week or so, so keep checking back with the page for details.

Employment Project Grades Finished!

Common Resume Errors

eplough's picture

There are some errors that seem to be popping up in almost everyone's resumes, so I thought I'd briefly discuss them here. Also, check out the various critiques for your peers' resumes - it is likely that you will find helpful advice in them.

Resume Feedback

eplough's picture

Over the next few days, check your resume in the Resume Peer Editing section for my feedback. I will work on them in the order that they were submitted. While you are waiting for feedback on your resume to come in, check out the feedback for your peers' resumes - it is likely that most of the feedback will apply to your resume!
