Week 5 Reading Response - Style and Editing
When writing a piece, it’s not only important to address and support your overall goal of the work, but it’s just as important that the sentence structure and word choices are correct as well. To convey your point or argument, you want to come off as strong and informed as possible, and syntax can have a negative effect on your goal or a positive one. WHAT you say is just as important as HOW you say it.
Reading through the Overview really touched on a lot of important aspects of writing a piece. Subjects and Verbs must agree, make sure one uses Accurate Language, one should usually use the Active Voice (making things more direct and personal to the reader).
Styling involves many things like Capitalization in Lists, Headings, Labels; Faulty Apostrophe Usage; Inaccurate Labeling. Many of these mistakes can be caught and prevented when you just take the time to proofread the entire document with a critical eye. This is an example of when it’s very useful to have a peer-review; using a fresh pair of eyes can be beneficial and serves as a great trial run for the real recipient.
The document having a Professional Look and Feel involves formatting and spacing. Some individuals don’t have the ability to see visual balance and unity. I have been able to see and catch issues of documents in the past. I have just given myself a lot of time to move things around and try out different arrangements. Patience and determination is key when working with programs. PowerPoint has been a favorite and easy one of mine; Word when it came to the White Paper was tedious and very time consuming. But you must remember that the end product is so much more valuable to the consumer and more pleasing to the eye. Visual Design and arrangement not only helps the viewer to navigate more successfully, but grabs the attention of others as well, and can serve as a marketing technique. Taking the time to format and design documents to the best of my ability will continue to be something I strive for. I know that in my future professions, I will always push to master new programs and make them really benefit me in the long run.
