Week 5 Reading Response - Style and Editing

When writing a piece, it’s not only important to address and support your overall goal of the work, but it’s just as important that the sentence structure and word choices are correct as well. To convey your point or argument, you want to come off as strong and informed as possible, and syntax can have a negative effect on your goal or a positive one. WHAT you say is just as important as HOW you say it.

Week 6 Reading Response - The Rhetoric of the Memo and E-Mail

A memo is a common request in the business setting. The two things all should know about the memo is that it’s usually an internal document that’s written between individuals within the same organization; it’s also typically a short, brief document and has a standard template. While I’ve been getting more comfortable using Word 2007, I have found a lot of templates they have available. I’m sure that when I work with a specific company, there will be a specified template to use when writing memos, but it’s a nice thing for me to practice.

Service Learning Project Blog #4

We have completed our Service Learning Project and presented to the class. We broke up the presentation into parts each of us could present. First, I explained the choices of organizations we started with and the reasons why we chose the Human Society. Mallory talked about the meetings we had with the Human Society during our Monday phone interview and our Tuesday meeting. Amanda discussed the 10 tips we included on the brochure and why we highlighted those particular ones.

After adding in the research and information obtained from the interview, we created major points that are important to new dog owners. Amanda took the 10 Tips and elaborated on them, Kara worked on the design of the brochure with Mallory, and I searched for images we could implement for the brochure and the PowerPoint.

Service Learning Project Blog #2

Our group met with the “Almost Home Humane Society” again on Tuesday. We proposed our ideas for the Ten Tips for New Dog Owners. Although we had many ideas of tips we could give, we needed to narrow it down and focus on a more specific client. Overall pet care is important, trying to include information about cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, and other pets one could have, we focused on Dogs; the Humane Societies most common resident.

Service Learning Project Blog #1

Our class was informed of Project #3 and after discussing the deliverables, everyone was to pick groups. I was lucky enough to have worked with Kara and Mallory during Project #2, so we knew because we worked so well together, we would definitely work as a group again. Amanda also joined our group and then we started to brainstorm ideas of organizations. Out of our 3 options, we decided to choose the Humane Society in Lafayette.

White Paper Blog #4

When we began Wednesday’s class with White Paper Design, Kara, Mallory, Minjung and I felt way ahead of the game. We had not only already chosen our design, but the format was already established after we compiled all of our information together. Tuesday’s group meeting was held right where class is held, and we were able to get a lot accomplished. Throughout all of Week 5, some of us didn’t have another class to rush to after English ended at noon, so we could stay for maybe an hour or more and get additional work done.

White Paper Blog #3

Once completing the Detailed Outline, Mallory quickly thought of our play-on-words title. She was a little concerned that it was too long or a little cheesy, but Ming loved it!

White Paper Blog #2

After compiling the Detailed Outline, the “Caterpillar” group (Minjung, Kara, Mallory, and myself), we individually worked on cutting down in our parts because the information and content was way too long and detailed.
