This set of instructions illustrates the four design principles. The instructions created an appropriate contrast, especially when moving between pictures and text. The color photos break up the monotony that is often created by lists of text. When shifting from one subject to the next, there is a clear visual marker, usually a change from bulleted text to a chart. These bullets and charts created a very balanced alignment. All of the bulleted text is left aligned, while the charts and pictures are generally centered. This creates a very balanced document. The grouping is very logical.

Pretty much the first chunk. Just need to know if it's too long or detailed for just one section. Thanks!

1. There is much more information here than the reader needs. Particularly, the second paragraph; if this is an inter-office memo, than these specifics of the laboratory do not need to be stated. It would already be known what the company does, so an explanation would not be necessary.

Originating in 1993, the term “spam” first meant “irrelevant or inappropriate postings to an Internet newsgroup, especially messages sent to a large number of newsgroups simultaneously, often for advertising purposes; an act or instance of sending such messages” according to OED.com. It is now generally used to refer to unsolicited electronic mail, usually sent in the form of mass-mail. It is also known by the names of “bulk e-mail” or “junk e-mail” (Wikipedia.org).

The way that the design is set up now is very efficient; it makes the most of every bit of white space available. This works when needing to fit into a text book, but is not necessary that it be margin to margin for Lois Adler’s particular situation. For her purposes, it seems overwhelming and overly scientific. These are people that are used to a child’s environment, bright colors, cartoony pictures and over simplification. For balance, I may take the form out of columns, but keep it in full paragraphs.
