Reading Response Week 6
For this project, our group has tried to use variety, conciseness, and audience to impact our design to be an effective way for the Crisis Center to spread word about its function. On the flyer designs that we were given to revise, the first thing I noticed was how text heavy they were. In creating our designs, we tried to eliminate text that we felt was unnecessary to communicate the most important information (especially on the flyer). From our experience as Purdue students, we have all experienced flyers on the ground and know that too much text on a flyer will not be read. We realize that audiences will not take a lot of time to read the fine print of a flyer unless their attention is first grabbed. We hope that by eliminating extra text, everyone who sees the flyer will be able to absorb more information more quickly.
We created variety in the design by having lines that break the traditional horizontal plane of the page. We kept the logo at the center and aligned with the page so that it would be the main focus. The book mentions that illustrations can be used to interpret text, which is exactly what the design of the logo is doing. It has been a little difficult to work with the logo since it was pre-created and is very detailed. We did try to incorporate the lines in the logo into our design with the background lines we included. These also create visual variety in the design while still forming a cohesive design with the logo.
For the poster, we chose to use a concise phrase, ‘Eat, Bid, and Be Merry’ to portray the main aspects of the evening. We also included the slanted lines and slanted text for variety. On both the poster and the flyer, we used different fonts and sizes to create variety. We also used the colors of the Crisis Center logo to enhance the variety in the design.

I agree that one of the strongest points of our flyer and poster is the fact that it isn’t as text heavy as the original two documents. We do a good job of creating visual interest to these pieces. The interest will draw viewers in, who will then read the text within the flyer. I think we did a good job of leaving only the most important, informative text on our flyer and poster. We provided enough information for the viewer to be interested in the event, as well as know the exact time and location of when the event is taking place. The main thing we need to focus on during our revisions is emphasizing the silent auction even more. I’ve already come up with a few ideas, so I’m anxious to hear your thoughts as well!

It was a good idea to remove so many words from both the flyer and poster. I agree that as Purdue students we see so many flyers as we are walking to class and will not read it all if there are too many words. Personally when walking, I read what I can in the few seconds I am passing by the flyer, I don’t think I have ever stopped to actually read one. I like your plans for the poster as well. I think the “Eat, Bid, and Be Merry” is a clever way to draw a reader in.

Elizabeth,
I still think the most important revision we made to the original documents is cutting down the words. Passers by will be more likely to look at flyers that require minimal reading. I like how everyone in our group realized this and made concise wording a priority for this project. This is another reason why I like the phrase “Eat, Bid, and Be Merry.” I agree it puts the message out there in a simple but direct way. Eating, spending money, and being happy are three hobbies shared by many people. With those words as a headline I think we can expect many people to turn their heads and see what this event is all about.
Eat, Bid, and Be Merry
Lisa,
I think our phrase, Eat, Bid, and Be Merry, will be very effective as well. It is very catchy and also informative at the same time. I like how you mentioned, “Eating, spending money, and being happy are three hobbies shared by many people.” I agree, this is true for many people. For this reason, I feel people would like to attend this event, so it is important to let them know right up front that these three activities are the main focus of the Bread and Soup Concert. So hopefully with this phrase as the headline, readers will be more interested in coming to this event.

Elizabeth,
I like what you have pointed out from the reading and how it influenced the creation of your project. I appreciate the fact that you tried to eliminate unnecessary text. You're right about the previous designs, they were very text heavy. Comparing the flyer to the flyers we see on the ground at Purdue is a great idea. The most important things need to stand out first so they will grab people in the small amount of time they have to read it as the pass by. As I told one of your group members, I really like the "Eat, Bid, and Be Merry" slogan. I think you guys are on the right track!

Hi Elizabeth!
I really was drawn to the design of your flyer and poster when I was looking through the projects. Yours is definitely a memorable one, but it may be more memorable for the design and not the event. Try to really hit home what the event is and the important information for it. Just like you said, we are Purdue students and have experienced walking around campus and reading all the
flyers. I know I tend to read ones that have fonts that are large
enough to be read. This is something to think about as I have noticed some of the font on yours is small and somewhat disguised within the design. I liked your Eat, Bid, and Be Merry slogan. This is a great advertising technique. Catchy slogans always are attention grabbers and get stuck in your head like a song. Just curious as to the color scheme you chose. I wonder if the Crisis Center has "colors" that they generally use. This is something you could get some more info for and maybe just switch your designs to use those colors instead.
Good job!

Elizabeth,
I agree with a lot of things you have said. I think the eat, big, and be merry idea is a very catchy slogan, that will draw a lot of interest from the crowds.
One thing we have to make clear going forward as we make our revisions is that we have to stick to our foundations of concise advertising of this event. We also should try adding more information to it, especially about the silent auction. I think large fonts and good color schemes will really make the silent auction item stand out and make readers inquire about that specific section of the event.

Wow, I really like your design for the flyer and poster. I like the color combinations and the use of lines. I think your group really has the most memorable design of poster and flyer. I like your ‘Eat, Bid, and Be Merry’ slogan. I agree with you that flyers and posters are not supposed to be too text heavy. That is true about the flyers with too much text will not get read because most of us are too ‘lazy.’ I personally tend to read the bolded font or anything that stands out from others. If they catch my eyes and I am interested, I would actually stop to read further. Good job on the first draft!
