Kevin's Reading Response Week 6
At our first meeting, three group members volunteered to produce the major documents. Sheila produced the press release, Jimmy designed the poster, and Kevin worked on the flyer. We agreed that prior to submitting our first draft we would review each other’s document to assure that the principles of variety, conciseness, audience and design were followed as well as the requests submitted by the client. On July15th we had a meeting and took a look at each other’s documents and made suggestions. I believe that all documents are on the right course and with revisions will successfully meet all of the criteria.
Design
On the flyer and the poster we have informative content and persuasive content. Specifically, each document includes that individuals should contact the Crisis Center for tickets and more information; they also list the entertainment and the restaurants participating in this event. Most importantly for our client, they convey information about the Silent Auction. These two documents also have good spatial layouts, items are centered and there is not too much white space. I don’t think either document looks cluttered or too wordy. I also think the use of fonts and bold on these two documents provides good contrast.
Variety
The use of the logos and color also enhances both the flyer and the poster. The client indicated that the flyers might be produced in color if the budget allows, however we need to prepare our documents for black and white reproduction as well. In an effort to keep colors to a minimum (for budget reasons), the blue that is used on the flyer is close to the blue in the United Way logo and the Crisis Center logo. On the poster there is the blue, red, and green and the logos.
Conciseness
The press release is very specific and matches nicely with the flyer and the poster. The wording on the press release is professional. Sentence structure is good. All sentences have varied openings that allow for easy reading.
Audience
All three documents will appeal to the audience we want to reach and gives the necessary information for this event.

Kevin,
Thanks for the nice comments about the press release! I appreciate it. I also did not realize your intent to limit the color for cost reduction to the same blue for the logo and the type. This is a great idea as I am sure these documents will need to have a colored logo. This color will fit nicely into the budget in this case. I also agree that our flyer and poster have a nice design and layout. Something that I think we should think about is doing some type of border. One of the groups has the restaurants listed as a border around their poster, and it looks really nice. I don't think we should do the same but we could come up with something similar. If this works out it could be put on all the documents to help tie them together.

Definitely good thinking about the use of color. As much as I think having multiple colors on the bottom make it easier to read, I think from a budget perspective I will switch the colors to just one since some color is better than no color. I feel your analysis for all three of the documents is dead on. The techniques used (the changing of font types, colors, and sizes) work well to emphasize variety and make it easier to follow. Now we will only have to make minor adjustments according to what Tom and our group reviewers think and we will be good to go. I agree with you that all three documents do appeal to the audience and I think our group is headed in the right direction.

Kevin, I really like your post. I like how you go into details in specifying each subject: design, variety, conciseness, and audience. That’s a good point you made about preparing our documents for black and white reproductions. I agree that some documents look amazing in color but not so much in black and white. I also agree about Sheila’s press release. I think that she did a great job in creating a press release. Do we really know who the audiences that we are trying to reach are? Where exactly are they planning to distribute the flyers and posters?
