Reading Response Week 5

The flyer I found is located at:

This flyer is for a charity race that the public may place a “donation”/ bid to “buy” a position in and race against professional cyclists. The first design element I noticed was the contrast between the writing on the left and the background color on the right. Because the writing is white against the orange background it makes the words on the left appear as if they’ve been extracted from the background on the right, even though these phrases aren’t the same. I also noticed the great detail involved with the image. They leave off the man’s face and focus on his muscles/veins and the movement of his cycling. For this flyer to be effective an Inkjet printer would likely need to be used. This enhances the overall effect of how serious this race is and emphasizes that professional cyclists will be racing against you, because I’m positive that regular people’s legs do not look like his. At the bottom you can tell they use logos that are recognizable. The one on the left (CSC) is most likely a professional cyclists logo and the one on the right of it is the logo for the event. This event has taken place before and the date was just replaced on the logo and used again to attract anyone who has already been involved in this event. The font style is all consistent and the date and phone number to place a bid are bold and larger. This attracts attention to the most relevant information for readers. They need to know when it is and how to get involved. In the white bubble on the bottom left the information is provided again in a contrasting color. The text is also fully justified which creates balance and the leading is an appropriate amount. The sentences are short and precise, enough to grab attention and inform without boring readers. This flyer did a nice job of taking normal objects, a person’s image for example, and effectively creating a message. A great way to attract attention is to turn a recognizable item into art. I will keep this is mind when working on our service learning project.

Kevin's comment

Hi Sheila - Wow! what a striking flyer. I think the color contrast is terrific, unfortunately we have to limit our colors due to cost restraints and the very strong possibility that our work will be printed in black and white. However, I think we can make a strong contrast statement wiith bold and different size fonts. The use of logos is always good - especially something the community recognizes. As Jane stated in her e-mail, the Soup and Bread logo is branded. I would guess the Crisis Center logo is also well known as is the United Way logo. Since the Crisis Center wants to empahsize the Silent Auction this year, we will need to be sure that it is strongly stated in our work.

You have found a very appealing flyer. The use of color really draws the eye to the poster. The one thing that I would change about this flyer is that it has too many words on it. I find myself looking at the flyer but not wanting to read all the literature. I think this flyer could be even more effective if the artist would limit the paragraph down to a couple of bullet points. You can get a pretty good idea of what the flyer is advertising without having to use so many words. Great flyer though, keep up the good work.

Wow, I really really like the flyer you chose! I am very impressed with the image on the left and the words on the right. I was afraid of getting too wordy on my flyer, but now I see there is a way to provide thorough information in paragraph form without getting too wordy. The poster seems to draw my attention further and further down the page to keep reading. I was not even interested in this event and found it easy to keep reading. This is a great example of catching the reader's attention and taking it for a joy ride once it has been captured. Overall, I am very impressed!

I really like the coloring of the flyer. Blue and yellow together is such a wonderful contrast. This is such an excellent flyer! I’m not really interested in the event, but because of the excellent design, I just couldn’t resist in reading the whole thing. But I just think what if this flyer is printed in black and white? Will it still have that ‘WOW’ effect? We need to consider this as well when we are designing a flyer. A flyer might look amazing in colors but not so much in black and white.
