Nils recently presented "onerous," an adjective meaning troublesome or creating a burden. This is a useful word. Example: "My English 106 instructor gave us this totally onerous abstract assignment."
It is related to the word "onus," which is a burden or duty.

"There are many ways for students to annoy their professors: "Did I miss anything important?" (No, nothing like that happens in our class.) "Will this test affect my grade?" (No, not at all.) "What are your office hours?" (They're the first thing on the syllabus.) Most professors understand that such questions are harmless; few, if any, would give the responses I've imagined here.

Here are two lectures I just heard about that some of you may be interested in attending for the required outside activity (see the report assignment sheet under "projects").
On Tuesday, March 31, 7:30 at Fowler Hall, Robert Laughlin, winner of the Nobel Prize for physics, will discuss his book The Crime of Reason and the Closing of the Scientific Mind.
