Design Log 1

Nylon Cover October 2008 First of all, I love the general layout and simplicity that is Nylon magazine. The typography and color schemes they use are top-notch. The title font usually stays the same for each issue, but depending on the content and covergirl...the colors change.  I was drawn to this cover from the October 2008 issue becasue of the boldly placed name of the covergirl. I am always a fan of the large, block-lettered title, but the contrast between the light pink "Nylon" and the black curvature of "Zooey Deschanel" is perfection!  I love juxtaposition and contrast in design, but sometimes it can be poorly executed.  In this instance, it looks great.

In terms of typography, I think the font that was chosen for the majority of the cover is very modern and simple...which appeals to my style.  Touching on the color scheme, the fact that pastels were mainly used along with the generic black plays up the fact that the issue is about "It Girls" nicely. Overall, this is the type of cover I wish I could claim as my own. Maybe one day..

Bravo!

Thanks for embedding the image in your post!

There's an old bit of advice about not mixing too many font styles on a page. This design seems to violate that principle. Why (in this context) do you think it works? What do others think?

i agree with the comment you

i agree with the comment you make about the color scheme and want to add attention to the fact that in addition to the colors and font chosen for the cover, attention was also paid to the colors of and worn by the cover girl, Zoey Deschanel.  If she did not cohesively fit into the color scheme, this unified pastel and black color scheme would fail.

typography

I think the mix typography works with the issue.  Most magazines keep the name of the magazine with the same typography every issue, like stated this one does the same.  But to create diversity they need other typographies as well.  The one displaying her name is great beause it is a girly font.  It have the curvey lettering and looks pretty.  It reminds me of middle school girls writing boys names in their notebooks.  This works well with the girl theme.  Though I don't personally like the fonts on the side I think they work for this issue.  Because the name is so over the type and flashy, if the other words were as flashy the magazine would be too over the type and an eye sore.  The use of color within that simple font sets special captions apart from the rest which works in the favor of the magazine.

response

I really like the design of this cover too.  The colors work really well together and look especially nice with the gray and black that Zooey Deschanel is wearing.  I also really like the font that her name is written in; my eyes were instantly drawn to it.

Mac G: design response

This cover is really awesome. It's always refreshing when a magazine spends some real time on trying to convey messages with their covers. You astutely pointed out the pink and blue pastels corresponding to the "It Girl" heading. I love the font of her name and how it is so prominent. Another magazine that often has really neat graphics on their cover is "B**ch" magazine (I edit it for obvious reasons). It's a magazine that focuses on Feminist responses to pop culture and they often have really neat covers. I'd put up a cover but I have a feeling it might offend some people. Here's the link to some of their issue covers (it's really non-offensive and they have good reasons for their title): B**ch Magazine.

contrast

I think this magazine cover works well because of the contrast.  There seems to be a significant amount of white space, however, there is a lot of contrast with the color black.  Her hair, nylons, and name are all in black, which makes them easily stand out.

The typography on this cover

The typography on this cover is by far my favorite aspect. Even though there are a lot of different types of fonts, I feel like the product still flows. How do you feel about how the text is placed on the page (i.e. the spacing, size, relationship to other text, etc.)?

Agreed.

Nylon does have a simple layout, but the color choice and text bring this cover to life. The placement of Zooey Deschanel also creates symmetry, making it easier to follow the text on either side of her picture.

The typopgraphy apt...

I definitely agree that the font chosen for her name fits her well.  The font is curvaceous and dark, like the figure and hair of the subject it describes.

I love Nylon

I, also love the Nylon magazine covers and this one is very simple yet the color contrast is divine.  I really like how the light, pastel colored(pink and light blue) fonts mesh with the dark in her pants, name and hair. I can also really appreciate the curves and font style of the Zooey Deschanel, and think the different fonts work well on magazines, because they are always giving a lot of information and it helps to break up this information.

Yay fonts!

I think that the fonts work because there are so many colors used on the page. Every one stands out but none over powers the curvy black name in the center. It's amazing how the placment on the words, the center as opposed to the side, makes the eye focus in on the main topic.
