Week 12 Project 2 Log

This week Hilmi and I completed and submitted the Illustrated Instructions for setting up a home network. We really hope people find them very useful. We edited the instructions per Kevin's suggestions, and the reviews made by others in the class. I think the biggest improvement was that we fixed the formatting, which made it hard to read. We established a single font and spacing, and used it throughout. I am really satisfied with the result. We had a few meetings in MSN Messenger to discuss project specifics.

Team Purdue Final Illustrated Instructions

Attached you will find Team Purdue's Final Illustrated Instructions and Usability Test. Also, there is a link to the original project proposal, and a revised proposal which conforms to the proper memo format.

The instructions are intended to help a user set up user accounts, a home workgroup using the Windows XP home network wizard, configure the Windows firewall, and optionally set up a static IP address.

Week 12 Work Plan

On my own part, I would like to add a small part about possible drawbacks of a static IP address, as one user suggested and also since the reading last week spoke of disclaimers. I think Hilmi will condense his work and crop the pictures and rearrange them so that they do not take as much space on some pages. Also, I will put a small introduction at the top of each section to explain what the section is for, and also an introduction on home networking itself, and why it is a good idea. I will also include a list of system requirements and equipment that may be needed for a home network, but I will try to stay far from hardware since this is not a hardware instruction set.

Other than that, we will look at some specific concerns brought up from the usability test, and go from there. I feel pretty comfortable with where we are, especially since there were so few problems with my hardest part, the static IP configuration.

Work plan

In order to finish this illustrated project, my team mate and I will have a meeting to go through all the details that need to be completed for the project. The first step that we will do is to read all the comments that have been made on our work. We will start fixing our work based on this comments and later on make some changes to meet the project requirements. We haven't start doing our project revisions memo yet, so this will definitely be the discussion topic during our meeting.

Lastly, we will do some grammatical checking to make sure that everything is in the right order.

Week 11 Log Project 2

This week was pretty busy and we got a lot done. Hilmi went
through his part and added screenshots, and I redid my instructions for Windows
XP so that they made sense in the context of Hilmi's. Also, we compiled the
sections into one draft so that the usability test could be tested with the
complete draft, instead of having people hunt around for the two sections.

It was good to see people go through the Usability Test
without problems. There were a few critiques, but overall we got a really solid
reception, and the instructions for the static IP address, which was my part
and the hardest instructions in the entire set, seemed to be manageable with no
difficulty.

Project log Week 11

This week my team had posted our instruction draft and
usability test. We had compiled our instruction draft into one document. I had edited my previous instruction draft by
adding screenshots, section header, and introduction while my friend Kenan had
change his instruction for Windows XP . Previously he had done his instruction
for Windows Vista. Our instruction looks very long because of the screenshot
and I am afraid our user will have difficulty to follow it.

Indeed, my concern has been answered when we received a comment
suggesting that we edit our screenshots picture and reduce the empty
space. We will fix this before
submitting our final instruction.

Toward the end of this week, we are going to test other
group instruction, answer their usability test question and respond to any
usability test replies that we may have.

Project Log Week 9

alim's picture

This week, my group had accomplished our initial draft for
the usability test. It has been a hectic week for us since one of our group members
had dropped this class at a very last minute and I had to cover the portion that
was left behind. From this moment I will do the account setting and home
networking instruction.

We have received couple of helpful comment
from the other group and I would like to thank them for being supportive to
what we did. We will try to fix everything that has to be fixed and come back
with a better set of instruction.

Week 9 Project Log

This week we accomplished a lot. First, Brooke seems to have
dropped the class, so we are down one person, and Hilmi will take the steps
Brooke was going to do and I have taken an extra section. In a way, this is OK
because working and communicating between three is more complicated than
between two people, but her input will be missed.

Hilmi and I did instructions for our sections. I felt my
section was really clear, but unfortunately at the time I did not have access
to a Windows XP machine, so I did the instructions for Vista. I now do have
access to an XP machine and I will be rewriting the steps for XP.
