WCS's MATLAB Instructions

mscheidt's picture

This blog contains attachments of the Project Revisions Memo as well as the final revision of the Illustrated Instructions project for Team WCS (Written Communication Specialists).  Members of Team WCS include Yin-Yu Chen, Matthew Scheidt, and Josh Walke.  The objective of the Illustrated Instructions is to describe how to plot simple functions and outside data with the use of the MATLAB application.  One will find the link to our Usability test which accompanies our Illustrated Instructions.  In addition, there is a link to our Illustrated Instructions Proposal.  It is Team WCS’s hope that these Illustrated Instructions are more in depth and easier to follow for the user than the ones provided on these topics from the MATLAB Help function.

Work Plan

Between the three of us, we will need to first take in comments and suggestions into consideration and integrate them into our current draft. Unfortunately, for our most recent post of our finalized draft for the illustrated instructions and usability test, we did not recieve and reviews or comments. We are still hoping that a group would be willing to do that for ous. We will need to finalize our illustrated instructions as well as the usability test. I believe in terms of formatting, everything is in good shape. We may need to add in one or two more screenshots for some intermediate steps where they are lacking. All in all however, I believe we are in very good shape for turning in our final illustrated instructions document and usability test, and not too many revisions need to be made. I will have to individually complete the peer and project evaluation as well as the Project 2 Checklist.

Project Log - Week 11

This log actually covers Week 10 as well, as I was able to complete some work over Spring Break.  This was done in order to meet the Wednesday March 19th deadline of completing the draft of instructions.  I was able to complete the first half of these instructions, and then did a review of it after Mike added his part to it.  In addition to this, I started the completion of a usability test for Team Derailer and the use of the Google Calender Application.  I actually did not have a Google Account yet, and had been meaning to sign up for one.  So this was a good motivational tool for me to actually do so.  While our group did not meet in person this week, we had excellent communication via email in order to make sure all tasks were completed and posted by each deadline.

Project Log - 3/21/08

Over the past week and throughout Spring Break, WCS developed a draft of our usability test and a draft of the instruction set.  I compiled initial drafts from Yin-Yu and myself and added to them for the instruction sets then emailed my compiled work to Yin-Yu who edited the document and then forwarded the document to Josh.  Similarly, Yin-Yu emailed me a mostly completed usability test and instruction set for a group concerning Google calendar.  I completed the usability test and added comments to the instruction set, then sent the documents to Josh.  Josh reviewed the submission and I posted it to the Kuntz_Spiewak blog.

Project Log Week 11

This week my team and I were able to post our draft of the illustrayed instructions and usability test.  I have had a busy schedule between 20 credit hours and a full time job to meet or talk with my group.  They have stepped up and really helped me out with what I am lacking on.  So they had the instructions pretty much completed.  I just looked them over made a few minor changes and wrote the conclusion.  I believe we will have no trouble with making any other deadlines.

Instructions and Usability Test

Project Log: Project 2-3

This week, we developed the usability test. We distributed a rough draft and then edited the rough draft independently. We met as a group on Tuesday night. While there we collectively decided on what would be best to keep and to change. We also made grammatical and formatting changes to make the usability test more appealing to the eye. We are going to work on the instruction set over spring break. Throughout the week, we plan to pass the instruction set around so that we will have a presentable draft when we return from spring break. Each of our drafts offered a different perspective on what we were going to do, but they will all be effective in developing the final product.

Week 9 Project Log

This week was another big step in the project, because we got a solid set of instructions.  Even though it is only a rough draft it is a good start because when we started the three of us all had different ideas of what we wanted to do.  We decided to use pieces of everyones ideas and combined them into one set of instructions.  This was good because it actually simplified some of the ideas we had and would make it easier for a rookie MATLAB user to understand it.  As far as the usability test goes I think it worked out pretty good.  We seem able to make the mid March deadline.

Project Log - Week 9

This week, we worked on getting the draft of the usability test in shape as a group.  However, before this, we each did our own individual drafts of the illustrated instructions.  After this, we decided to go with a combination of my idea of plotting simple trigonometric functions in MATLAB and that of retrieving data and producing an output with aesthetically pleasing plots.  We have split up the work in putting together a final illustrated instructions draft to submit for the Week 11, March 19th deadline.  Overall, I found the work done on the usability test so far to be a success, considering we don't have a full set of instructions completed yet.  However, I believe we have forseen a lot of the issues that people may have with our illustrated instructions in MATLAB.  We are again well on track this week, and will hopefully get a step ahead with the work done over spring break for Week 11.
