Project 2: Final Revision

jeseger's picture
This blog contains the final revision of the Illustrated Instructions project for Team Yatta.  Members of Team Yatta include Zach Miller and Jon Seger.  The goal of the Illustrated Instructions is to describe how to create a simple cup using the CAD program Pro-Engineer. Attached to this blog, you will find the final revision of the Illustrated Instructions as well as the revisions that were made upon receiving the Usability Test results. In order to see what was included in the Usability Test, you can follow the link below. In order to see the initial Project 2 Proposal, you can go the website as seen below.

It is the hope of Team Yatta that these instructions will one day aid a student in learning more about Pro-Engineer.

Project Work Plan

To finish the project Jon and I have some revisions to make.  As I said stated previously, these revisions were made from feedback given to us by our peers.  Using the feedback, which was very helpful, we were able to make and still need to make some of the following changes:

Project Log Week 11

This past week Jon and I made several revisions to both our illustrated instructions draft and also to our Usability test.  The corrections that we made were due to a couple different reasons.  The main reason we made changes was as a result of the feedback that we received from our blog post that included the instructions draft and the usability test.  We got some useful feedback that helped make our instructions even better.  The secondary reason that we made changes to our instructions and usability test was from our own read-through of the two documents.  As we read through the documents to make changes suggested by the peer review, we caught a few more mistakes that we were able to fix also.  It has worked out well.

Work Plan

In order to finish our project, Zach and I need to make the final revisions on our instructions.  In order to determine which revisions we needed to make, we consulted the replies to our Usability Test.  Overall, these replies were extremely helpful in determining exactly what needed to be revised in our instructions.  Therefore, some of the things that need to be revised in our instructions are as follows:

  • Enlarge many of the pictures
  • Add a screenshot of the shell thickness box
  • Change some grammatical errors
  • Add a revision to the working directory section
  • Add a zoom and rotate reminder at the end of the Creating the Base Extrustion section
  • Add a resource for Pro-Engineer
Zach and I will be working on these revisions together.  After these revisions are complete, we will be submitting our Illustrated Instructions project.

Project Log for Week 11

This week was a very productive one for Team Yatta. On Monday, Zach and I sat down and revised our Usability Test. This included both of us discussing the changes that needed to be made, and then actually making the changes ourselves. The final draft of the Usability Test was then constructed and posted in my blog. In addition, I sat down on Monday as well to complete our unfinished draft of the instructions. There were a few places that we left unfinished such as the extrustions section or the beginning of the instructions where we needed to explain how to pan, zoom, and rotate. I finished up these explanations so that other teams could use our Usability test most effectively. On Wednesday, Zach completed another teams Usability test and made recommendations and comments on it. Hopefully, this will be very helpful for the team.

Final Usability Test with Instructions Draft

The instructions draft and final usability test are attached to this blog post as PDF files. The instructions draft is nearly complete. We only have a couple of revisions left before it is finally finished. The usability test is completely finished. Team Yatta is now waiting for someone to use our usability test and give us good feedback on our instructions. We appreciate any feedback that you can give.

In addition, we have also posted the usability test text in the body of this post for easy viewing. However, the PDF file looks much nicer. I would recommend using the PDF file if you do end up using our usability test.

Usability Test for Drawing a Cup in Pro-Engineer

Project Log for Week 9

jeseger's picture

This week was very eventful for Team Yatta.  Zach and I sat down early this week and completed three major parts of the project - our individual illustrated instructions drafts, a usability test draft, and a combination of our individual illustrated instructions into one preliminary draft.  In order to do our individual illustrated instructions, Zach and I split up the instructions from the outline that we had made earlier.  He took the second half and I took the first half.  Once we had made our separate drafts, we combined them both together making revisions along the way.  In order to construct the usability test, Zach and I sat down, went through our instructions, and thought of some questions that addressed the problem areas in our instructions.  We made sure to ask questions about any place that we thought was weak or difficult to understand.  Once, we came up with the questions, we formatted them into the form of a usability test.

Project Log

This weeks completed tasks included the completion of individual drafts for the illustrated instructions, an initial set of questions for the usability test, and an assembling of the individual drafts into a single illustrated instructions document.  For the individual drafts of the illustrated instructions, we took the outline of steps that we had decided the previous week and designated a half way point, and Jon took the first half of the instructions while I took the last half of the instructions.  For the usability test, questions were thought of that would be helpful for us to have answers to in order to be able to improve the usability of our instructions.  The last accomplishment of the week was to merge the two individual drafts that we completed.  This was done in the computer lab, and a couple hours were spent editing to make sure the instructions had a good flow.
