Peer Review of Resume

KWINORBIT's picture
  1. What can the writer do to make the resume better tailored to the specific job being applied for? The resume could be better tailored toward the specfic job if the objective was directed toward the specific job you are applying for. In other words, the objective states what you are hoping to achieve in the workplace, but it does not say what you hope to accomplish with that specific company. For example, if you were applying to Catapiler, say what you hope to gain specifically from the Catipiller comapny.
  2. Is the layout and design pleasing to the eye? Make at least one suggestion for improving it. I think your layout is great. You utilize your space very well. The horizontal seperating lines are extremely helpful to the eye and keeping the text organized.  My only suggestion would be in the experience section. You should have locations/addresses if where you gaine the experience. For example, I know EPICS is through Purdue, but does the employer? Which Eli Lilly plant did you work at? Where? Was the cook medical software something you did at school or on an internship with a company? Other than that, the information is awesome.
  3. Does the resume fit comfortably within the page (as opposed to being squished in or stretched out)? What can the writer do to improve it? The resume fits very well. Again, I like the use of the black seperating lines and bullet points.
  4. Is it easily readable (no confusing fonts, clearly marked sections)? What improvements can be made? It is very organized. Font, size, style, is all consistent. Your sections are clearly marked.
  5. Does it use typography (including headers and bold and italics) appropriately and effectively? Yes, you have a great use of typography. You utilize it in a way that is pleasing to the eye and not overwhelming.
  6. Is the most important information located on the left side of the page and near the top whenever possible? Identify at least one part that could be better placed. Everything seems to be placed in an effective manner. It appears that the most important information is placed effectively. My only suggestion would be to possibly considering placing education directly under your objective. This is a personal preference, but I have typically seen education listed before anything else.
  7. Does the content of the resume support the objective (if there is one)? Explain. The content definitely supports the objective. You note that you would like to further your experience with software development and a significant portion of the information you provide relates to computer skills/ coding/ etc from what I can see.
  8. Is the resume too short? Where can it elaborate? Job skills? Responsibilities? Education? I think the resume is a very effective length. Not too short, not too long.
  9. Is material sequenced in order of importance and relevance? Again, I wonder if education should be placed directly under the objective? Other than that, everything is placed very well.
  10. Do bulleted items begin with action verbs? Are list items ordered in terms of importance? The majority begins with action verbs, but some do not. The items do appear  to be listed in order of importantce (its a little hard for me to evaluate because I am unfirmiliar with a lot of the computer-related terminology /experience.
  11. Does the resume avoid generalities and focus on specific information and professional terminology? Yes, the resume is very detailed and specific.
  12. Does the resume pass Evaluation checklists on 228-229 of The Thompson Handbook? Yes, the resume does pass the evaluation from the Thompson Handbook.
  13. What other observations can you make about the resume?  Overall, I think the resume is great. My final Observation is under education. I would consider making "Purdue University Bold". You bold your degree and expected graduation, because this is very relevant to the employer, however I believe the university you obtained the degree from is also a key part of the information and should probably be bold as well. Overall- Great job Kenan!

What can the writer do to

What can the writer do to make the resume better tailored to the specific job being applied for?

For the most part he did a very good job on tailoring it towards Amazon. In the objective it may help to actually address Amazon.

Is the layout and design pleasing to the eye? Make at least one suggestion for improving it.

The resume it set up good for the most part. There is a lot of information on it and it all jumps out at once.  If anything I would take out some of your things in the experience section because you have proablly too much stuff there. Leave the important ones that relate to the job and elaborate on them more and show how they prepared you for that position

Does the resume fit comfortably within the page (as opposed to being squished in or stretched out)? What can the writer do to improve it?

The resume does fit within the page, but once again it just seems like so much stuff on there, which necesarly isnt a bad thing

Is it easily readable (no confusing fonts, clearly marked sections)? What improvements can be made?

Yes it is easy to follow and read

Does it use typography (including headers and bold and italics) appropriately and effectively?

Yes he bolds things that need to be bolded. Looks good

Is the most important information located on the left side of the page and near the top whenever possible? Identify at least one part that could be better placed.

The biggest suggestion I could make would be to change ethe experience part. Instead of making it like a paragraph format like you did almost, break it up with the job position and location, then underneath put what you did there. If you take some of the less relevent things off of there you could set the format up a little better.

Does the content of the resume support the objective (if there is one)? Explain.

Yes, he states in the objective he wants to further his software development, and throughout the resume he shows different computer programing courses he has taken.

Is the resume too short? Where can it elaborate? Job skills? Responsibilities? Education?

No, The resume is actually probally too long for just looking for an internship.  I have stated some suggestion alreadyo n the experience part.

Is material sequenced in order of importance and relevance?

For the most part. If I was you I would maybe move previous experiences up more towards the top and move the relevent course work down some. Companies are going to care more about your previous experience than about your course work because on the job is where you actully learn the most stuff.

Do bulleted items begin with action verbs? Are list items ordered in terms of importance?

No, he doesnt really use bulleted items. I kind of touched on that a little bit on the experience section. take some of the items out and then you can bullet stuff and elaborate on the more important stuff.

Does the resume avoid generalities and focus on specific information and professional terminology?

Yes, does a good job on professional terminology

Does the resume pass Evaluation checklists on 228-229 of The Thompson Handbook?

yes

What other observations can you make about the resume?

There is a lot of great experience here. I think you just tried to put too much in it though. Overall i would say you are qualified for the position.

What can the writer do to

What can the writer do to make the resume better tailored to the specific job being applied for?

I think the Objective section could be punched up some more and specialized more towards the job you're looking for

Is the layout and design pleasing to the eye? Make at least one suggestion for improving it.

It looks very visually pleasing, good formatting.

Does the resume fit comfortably within the page (as opposed to
being squished in or stretched out)? What can the writer

do to improve
it?

Fits perfectly.

Is it easily readable (no confusing fonts, clearly marked sections)? What improvements can be made?

Very readable.

Does it use typography (including headers and bold and italics) appropriately and effectively?

Bolding and bullets look great and pinpoint the important information.

Is the most important information located on the left side of the
page and near the top whenever possible? Identify at least one part
that could be better placed.

I honestly can't find anything that really needs moving.

Does the content of the resume support the objective (if there is one)? Explain.

A lot of content to show your abilities in programming.

Is the resume too short? Where can it elaborate? Job skills? Responsibilities? Education?

-Might be able to add a bit more to your experiences, but not much.

Is material sequenced in order of importance and relevance?

-You may want to place experiences before coursework, they show most of your abilities anyways.

Do bulleted items begin with action verbs? Are list items ordered in terms of importance?

-Most do, there are a couple that need action verbs.

Does the resume avoid generalities and focus on specific information and professional terminology?

-Yes it does.

Does the resume pass Evaluation checklists on 228-229 of The Thompson Handbook?

-It doesn't have references, but it doesn't really have room for them either.

What other observations can you make about the resume?

-Looks very professional, the only change I would recommend
is punching up the objective. Good Luck!
