Below are my completed blogs for the Employment Project, part one. It
includes my job search activity, two job ads and the analysis of one of the job
ads.

JOB SEARCH ACTIVITY

Work Experience

1. Research Assisstant (2004-present). Purdue University foods and Nutrition
Department, West Lafayette, IN

Supervisor: Wayne W. Campbell, PhD

Requirements: participant recruitment, screening of participants, data
collection (blood, urine, energy expenditure and physiologic measurements),
data analysis (using spss), writing a research paper and presenting results at
a national conference.

Ballet Teacher (2004-present). Morton Community Center, West Lafayette, IN

Supervisor: Laverne Mikhail

Requirements: Prepare weekly dance combinations, teach classes, create
routines and costumes for the yearly performance

2. Trinity Mission Outlet Store volunteer (Fall 2004). Trinity Mission
Outlet Store, Lafayette, IN

Requirements: sorted and shelved donated goods, developed a
proposal to update and improve store

Patient family Advocate (Summer 2007) Duke University Hospital, Durham NC

Requirements: Escorted patients and family, helped admit and relay messages
to patients, assisted nurses and receptionists

PR and Marketing Director and General Manager (2006- present) College
Mentors for Kids Purdue Chapter, West Lafayette, IN

Requirements: Direct college students in organizing and
carrying out weekly activities to acquaint at-risk youth to a college
education, responsible for safety and discipline of children, raise money for
organization, prepare press releases, recruit members, prepare newsletters and
promote awareness of the program in the community

Education Experience

4. I have gained valuable writing skills from both English classes and from
writing my research thesis. I believe that these writing skills will be
extremely useful in any job situatuon. I have also gained leadership experience
from my position in College Mentors for Kids. I have learned the importance of
being a strong leader.

5. CFS Dean's Merit Scholarship. A monetary award given to accademically strong
students in Consumer and Family sciences

Dean's List and Semester Honors for each semester at Purdue. An award based
on academic achievement

Foods and Nutrition Honors Student. Honors based on GPA and the completion
of an honors project.

Skills

6. I have many skills useful in laboratory settings. I am able to use
software such as excel, and spss. I can also use laboratory equipment such as a
metabolic cart, centrifuge, and body plethysmography equipment. These skills
would be very useful in a research setting especially in a Nutrition related
field.

7. I have skills in working with children as I have taught ballet for four
years and been involved with College Mentors for Kids for two years. I am also
fluent in French.

8. The software that I am able to use and know well include; excel, spss and
Nutritionist Pro

9. The equipment I have worked with before includes; microscope, centrifuge,
metabolic cart and body plethysmography equipment.

Job Description
Technologist
SHIFT: We get opening on 1st, 2nd and 3rd. We also get 10 hour shifts on 3rd
shift

SUMMARY:
Assists in the daily activities associated with the production and
development of kits, maintenance, quality control and sale of cultures
in the Cultures Department by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties
may be assigned.

Assists Section Head and/or Product Manager in product development
including duties such as research, editing, design, testing, writing,
cost, profit margins and product feasibility.
- Provides kits, components, and bill of materials and written directions to
the Product Manager.
- Assists in the timely fulfillment of customers' orders with high-quality
products.

Inoculates cultures to insure sufficient inventory for orders. Cultures
include but are not limited to: algae, fungi, protozoa, plant tissue,
virus, bacteria, and possible pathogens.
- Maintains cultures of
identified micro-organisms in prescribed or standard media, controlling
factors such as moisture, aeration, temperature, light, and nutrition.
- Performs quality control duties to maintain sterility, purity, and quality of
cultures.

Communicates with customers by phone to answer technical questions,
resolve problems, and offers advice on proper use of materials.
- Assists in maintaining notebook of standard operating procedures.
- Assists in periodic inventories.
- Conducts workshops demonstrating proper classroom use of existing product
line and new products.

SUPERVISION OF OWN WORK:
Proceeds alone under standard practice, refers questionable cases to
Supervisor.

QUALIFICATION
REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be

hand tools such as a scalpel and inculcating loop/needle. Ability to
work safely with medias and restricted chemicals using standard

Because I have worked in a
nutrition laboratory on my own research project for four years, I have a lot
of experience with the language skills necessary for this job. I had to
research and analyze many scientific articles before beginning my project so
that I would understand where the research community stood on the subject at
that point in time. I also have had experience presenting my work. I have had
to give presentations to my boss as well as classmates and people from the
community. I have learned how to effectively communicate information to many
different types of people.

I have taken both algebra
and geometry classes and can use those concepts in many situations. I have
also had experience with calculating interests, discounts and commissions
through a finance class at Purdue and have had experience with higher level
calculations through my research project.

Through my research project
I have learned how to follow scientific instructions that were given to me in
both oral and written form. I have also had experience working with variables
and standardized equations to collect and interpret data.

Through my research project
and biology classes I have taken at Purdue I have used each of the pieces of
equipment mentioned enough to be comfortable with them. I am also aware of
and follow safety rules while I am in the laboratory.
