along with the instructions. Any additional comments or questions would be
greatly appreciated.

You will need a Linksys

router, for it is very common. If taking the usability test and do not want to
reset your router, please reference the time you took setting your current
router up.

Physical Connection

1. Was it easy to understand the process of physically connecting the router to the modem provided by your
Internet Service Provider?

Yes, it was very easy and the illustrations provided definitely helped.

2. Do you understand the different kinds of ports the router has to offer and how they are used?

I now understand that there are connection, internet and power ports.

Web Based Utility

3. Where you able to access the web based utility without any problems?

Yes, there were no problems completing this step.

Setup

4. Did the instructions explain the basic setup mechanisms in enough detail to understand correctly?

Yes, I was able to set up the router as specified in the instructions.  The only area I ran into confusion was trying to confirm my internet connection type, but that is because mine is provided to me by my apartment complex and I've never bothered to wonder about it.  Everything was easy to follow though.

General

5. Is the format of the illustrated instructions easy to read and comprehend?

The format is good, I like how explanatons and definitions are included for terms.

6. Do the screenshots we provide help understand the content of the instructions? (ie: Do they need to
be bigger, Are they relevant to the question)

The screenshots helped, however I think there could have been more throughout the process.  I had the screen pulled up on my computer so during the process it wasn't an issue.  However, before I started I read through the instructions and it was time consuming to keep scrolling back and forth to the screenshot for reference.  I know this might not make sense, because the purpose of the instructions is to use them as you are doing the process, but it was just an observation.

7. Are there any instructions that you believe to be too technical? (Please list out numbers of questions you
do not understand)

There's a lot of technical vocabulary in there, but overall it is easy to pick out what should be done in each step.

8. Does putting the warnings in a red font help or distract you from the content?

The red font definitely brings it to attention, and that's never a bad thing for important info.

9. Please offer any additional questions or additions/explanations you might have.

The only other thing observed was that there are a lot of technical terms and jargon used, but you did a good job defining most of them.  Personally for someone who is computer un-saavy, there was some decreased readability in some sentences due to such vocabulary.  For example:

L2TP acts like a data link layer protocol for tunneling network traffic between two peers over an existing network.

this doesn't explain to me very well exactly what L2TP is, just that I probably don't want to use this option.  For someone who is more familiar with computers and more comfortably with such vocabulary there is no issue.

Overall I think your instructions meet the goal that was mentioned in the introduction.  I felt like you explained how to set up the router and the options in enough detail that allowed for the succesful set up of a secure network.

Usability Test Response

Mylez's picture

Thanks for the feedback. I will revise the instructions to have more screenshots and explain a couple terms more in depth. Some of the terms, if I go more in depth, could possibly get more confusing. I hope it was easy to setup the router, and I appreciate you trying the process at home because I did not think anyone would provide feedback on our instructions.

Usability Test - Team C Squared

Physical Connection

Was it easy to understand the process of physically connecting the router to the

modem provided by your Internet Service Provider?

Yes, the instructions were very clear.

Do you understand the different kinds of ports the router has to offer and how

they are used?

Yes, the illustrations were helpful to find the internet and the 4 ethernet ports.

Web Based Utility

Where you able to access the web based utility without any problems?

Yes, the screen automatically appeared and was easy to configure.

Setup

Did the instructions explain the basic setup mechanisms in enough detail to

understand correctly?

Yes, the basic setup was very detailed.  I thought that it was very informative to users that do not understand each protocol option.  Many people would not take each option into consideration considering that they would not know each protocol configuration.

General

Is the format of the illustrated instructions easy to read and comprehend?

The instructions were easy to read and very informative.

Do the screenshots we provide help understand the content of the instructions?

(ie: Do they need to be bigger, Are they relevant to the question)

I think the screenshots were great.  I might add a few more to make the steps flow a little better, maybe one for advanced routing and security.

Are there any instructions that you believe to be too technical? (Please list out

numbers of questions you do not understand)

All of the instructions are technical but they also are very informative.  All of the acronyms have the name right next to it for explanation.

Does putting the warnings in a red font help or distract you from the content?

The red font helps the user recognize warnings and important notices.  I would definitely keep the red font.

Please offer any additional questions or additions/explanations you might have.

I might add a little more on the importance of a domain name or some reasons why a user might use a domain.  Other than that, the instructions were very informative and I really don’t have much to add.  It meets the goals and makes it easy to set up a network.
