Usability Test Draft

Attached is our usability test. Our biggest concern is
whether the user is able to get the home networking works. Theoretically, the
network should work right after following all the instructions. However, in
some cases, user probably has to wait for three hours or more for the router to
configure the network. We would like to
hear any comments regarding this matter.
We expect the area that will cause confusion is the Control
panel view. Since some user maybe using Category View or Classic View, they
probably will have difficulty to find the link that we wrote in the
instructions. For your information, the instruction was written for Category
view. Thus, we would like to know if users are having any difficulties to
follow the instruction.
We are hoping the user to give feedback on any parts that we
didn’t address in our question.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Peer Review of Usability Test- for Fri March 7
After reviewing your instructions and usability test, I was impressed with the overall content and clarity of the instructions provided, though I have one quite simple and perhaps even silly question. What exactly is home networking? Why do people need that?
I am sure it is safe to assume that most people utilizing your instructions would have some firmiliarity with this, but I am just thinking, what if they don't? For example, when I came to college, my dad told me to set up my computer with the school network and wireless, and I was able to easily access the instructions and follow them, but I had no firmilarity with what I was doing or what effect it was directly having on my computer.
Do you think it would make sense at some point, just real briefly in a sentence or two, to say what effect following instructions will have? Such as, This is for setting up home network, which will ___________. The reason I am making this suggestion is because someone may want to follow your instructions, but if they are not entierly firmiliar with the process it can be a little confusing.
So thats just a thought to consider. I am not sure if that makes sense, or if you even think it would be worth it, but thats just the first thing that came to mind. Otherwise, the usability test and instructions looked great! I really liked the bold/underlined headings in the usability test. This made everything very clear, and helps to break the questions/ steps into various sections.
I had my computer in the classic view, so in order to simplify my tasks following the instructions, I decided to change it to the category view, instead of sturgggling to find the link.
Thanks. We will have an
Thanks. We will have an explanation of home networking, and why it is necessary for file sharing between computers in a home, or to use 1 printer for many computers.
Also, we will make it clear that the photos assume category view, which is the default in Windows XP.
Usability test draft comment
Overall it is a good set of instructions. I’m guessing you are waiting to add the pictures in the next draft? Your first sentence needs re-worded on your instructions. (ie logged in) I do like how you highlighted the names of the buttons that you click. I would say that the audience you are writing this report is for people that are not computer literate. I think you should add something about file sharing that warns the user about the possible negatives of this setup. I like the organization of your test draft. The questions listed under each category would be easy to leave feedback. You have a lot of questions and I think you could probably slim them down a little.
Thanks for the feedback. We
Thanks for the feedback. We will look at removing some unnecessary questions, rewording some sentences, and mention the possible negatives of this setup.
