Reading Blog- Week 13 (Kristin Shrack)

On page 209 in the CDA book, it talks about pathos in writing. Before I could even get into the actual learning part of the reading, I noticed something in the introduction that stood out to me. When it says, "But whatever your upbringing or cultural background, emotion is always there. We can't choose to have it or not."

Reading Blog- Week 12 (Kristin Shrack)

This week I read pages 188-200 in CDA. I really enjoyed reading about the "ethos in writing" portion on pages 192-193. We are learning about this in many of my classes right now. I think that ethos is a very important part of writing. Ethos is the way you write that appeal to the readers ethics. It has a lot to do with values and just the overall way that a writing presents themself. At the beginning of this part, they talk about how what you wear for different things says something about yourself.

Reading Blog- Week 11 (Kristin Shrack)

Just by reading the first column, I noticed that religion was somewhat of a factor in this story. The town in Ohio was mainly an Amish town.
When Gary Smith began to introduce Willie, he said, "Willie had been raised Amish- but he'd walked out on the religion at the age of 24- no, he'd peeled out, in an eight-cylinder roar, when he just couldn't bear it anymore."

Reading Blog- Week 9 (Kristin Shrack)

I liked reading about photograph "Cropping" on page 355 in CDA. The book makes cropping seem like a very big deal and much of the time we don't think about how important cropping a photograph might just be. In fact, based on the reading, it is almost just as important to consider what a photographer cropped out as what the photographer kept in the picture. You can ask yourself questions like, Why did they crop the photograph like that? What effect did it have on the overall photograph?

Reading Blog- Week 8 (Kristin Shrack)

One of the most important things discussed in this week's reading can be found at the bottom of page 145. It says, "And you need to adopt an ethical attitude as a researcher, which means being open to what the research shows you and being willing to change your position if you cannot support it through the research you do".

Our Poster

We made our poster more of an advertisement about an organization (Students Striving to Succeed) that works to promote success and positive attitudes among Purdue Students on campus.
We felt like the youtube movie shown in class was somewhat about the negative side of college. However, we beleive that no matter what situation a student is in, or how hard school is, every student has the ability to do well and succeed.

Children and the Media

Did you know that children, from the ages of 8 to 18, spend more time in front of a computer, television, or video game than any other activity in their lives except for sleeping (Children 2006)? Have you ever thought about the long-term effects that the media may have on a child? Being an older sister to three girls, it is obvious to me that children are affected by what they see. Due to the fact that children are becoming more mature at such a young age, it is necessary to understand how the media may be affecting them.

Math Zone Blog

http://www.mhhe.com/math/mathzone/

This website is an online math course. Students can do homework online and submit it for a grade. The problem with this website is that it is not easy to use. For as many students that use this website, it has not been made very user-friendly.
To use this course, one must first register, which is a process that a student cannot figure out without directions. After being registered, the website is divided up into different catagories- homeworks, grades, discussions, help etc. This portion of the website is also very difficult to use.
