English 420, Business Writing

Hey all,

I apologize for this being late, but this is the second time I am posting this blog entry. The first time I attempted to, I got an "access denied page" and lost the entire blog entry. Anyhow, this week has involved a degree of overlap between the white paper project and the service learning project . With regards to the white paper project, we finished the handout for our presentation, finished the presentation it self, and began making suggested changes to our rough draft. The only bit left to complete prior to our presentation, is to tape the video that we plan on incorporating.

With regards to the white paper project, we decided on three locations that could make use of our services. They are as follows:
- The Indian Veterans Home (IVH)
- The Purdue Speakers Bureau
- The Lafayette Brew House

The Indiana Veterans home is in need of computer training booklets for the residents. The residents are unaware of even basic computer-based tasks such as turning on the computer etc. If we were to undertake this task, I suggest we make a booklet showing them how to turn on a computer, access the internet, and create an email account. Prior to doing this of corse, we will need to meet with the volunteer coordinator of IVH, Carolyn Johnson, to see if they can make use of our services.

The next organization of choice is the Purdue speakers Bureau. the Bureau serves as a liaison to a plethora of speakers (both faculty and staff members). These speakers are well renowned and can serve as a very useful commodity to both student organizations at Purdue, and the Lafayette Community. Unfortunately, their publicity has not been great, and most students remain unaware of their existence. To address this, we can help them create promotional fliers/pamphlets to be distributed among students.

Our last proposal was to revamp the lackluster menu cared at the brew house. Their current menu is in a a newspaper format and is faded and not adequately representative of the quality food they serve. I am sure we could be of some assistance here.

I think with the 3 proposals established and our memo sent in, we are in a good position to start the service learning project in full swing!
