English 420, Business Writing

Our final week working on the project was pretty busy. We presented our solutions to the Board of Directors for Knight Corporation on Monday, and it went well. We all worked individually on a portion of the paper to revise and edit it after reading over the comments that were on our rough draft. We then met to combine our parts and do any final editing and revising that needed to be done. I feel confident in our work. We have worked really well together.

I am sorry this is late. We finished up our rough draft last week before spring break. We met to add design elements to our rough draft which was just a plain paper at that point. We had combined all of our assigned written parts to form the paper. We have all been working well together. We need to meet to start work on our presentation for Wednesday and to look at the changes we need to make to our rough draft.

I am having difficulty locating insurance costs for the providers. I have looked around, and the problem that I am having is that to see the cost, you need to be a part of the business. They are also saying that they only want serious requests. I will continue to look around for information on the costs of insurance from Humana, Blue Cross, and Aetna. I have not had a whole lot of time to spend on it this weekend because I was gone a lot, but I have spent a couple hours researching and have not found much.

I was not able to be at our first group meeting, but my task is to research long-term care insurance for aging and retiring employees and their families. With Knight Corporation’s older workforce, this category is very important to look at because it will affect many of the employees. I did a basic Google search on this topic as a basic starting point. Long term care insurance is used for nursing, social and rehabilitation purposes that are not covered by health insurance. It is not health or life insurance.

I will be critiquing resumes three and four. I will start by taking a look at resume three. The first thing I saw when I looked at the page was the use of a lot of the white space on the page. Next, I noticed that the person writing this resume used a “Summary” instead of a “Career Objective” statement. I do not see the point in summarizing a resume. I think a career objective statement would work a lot better for this person because they are looking for a career for when they graduate in May.

I have attached a copy of my resume draft. I am applying for a job with Farm Credit Services of Mid-America. I decided to put my Agriculture Economics degree first on my resume because it more qualifies me for the internship. For my work experience, I tried to show that as I have worked on the farm I have earned more responsibility and trust. I left a few of my FFA accomplishments from high school on my resume because some of the awards I did not receive until I was in college. Other awards are seen as very big accomplishments in the agriculture industry.
