English 420, Business Writing

This week was a rather disappointing week when it came to our service learning project. We met with out contact at Nine Irish Brothers, Matt, on Monday. I had come down with a very bad case strep throat, so I couldn't attend the meeting. Jake had stepped in as group leader and went to the meeting in my place. We had met earlier that day to complete a few odds and ends on the document for the meeting with Matt. The meeting didn't go very well only because we had forgotten to save the document on Jake's computer. He rescheduled for the following day.

This past week we have gotten much done on the Service Learning Project. On Monday, we met with Matt at Nine Irish Brothers to discuss the layout of the orientation guide and the program we wanted to use to construct the document (Microsoft OneNote). We also met with the main bartender, and part owner, Alex. He revised the list of bartender's duties and helped us create a list for special cleaning duties for the bartenders on specific days of the week. With Matt, we revised the orientation guide and told him our suggestions for the document.

This week we met with Matt, our contact at Nine Irish Brothers to discuss our plans more thoroughly and to sign the contract. Matt brought along the current documents that the company uses for training manuals along with checklists for each position on a CD. He discussed what he wanted more thoroughly and as a group, decided to only work with the front of the house staff for the time being.

This is the final work blog for the White Paper Project. Last week, my group presented our project to the class and Knight Corporation on Wednesday. I believe this was fairly successful and ran rather smoothly with few complications.

This week the Service Learning Project was introduced. After discussing our options, my group decided to try to work with O'Bryan's Nine Irish Brothers Pub. Jake and I went to the pub after class one day this week and talked with the general manager about our proposal. We explained why we were there and what we hoped we could help him with. Immediately, he suggested a project that he was been wanting to get around to, but just doesn't have the time.

This past week I have been busy revising our draft of the white paper. After our meeting with Mr. Hannah on Friday, we have decided to rewrite the paper with a different mindset and layout. We have also been busy working on the design of our white paper. We have decided to make the layout simple, while including mostly graphs and charts to allow our concepts to be easily understood.

This past week, we didn't assign any work on our white paper to be done. The draft was turned in during class on Wednesday and we are awaiting the comments in class on Monday. We have discussed some details of our design and decided to write it in InDesign and present through PowerPoint. When we receive those comments back, we will revise our draft and begin on the design of the white paper. Next week will be a busy week for finalizing our paper and planning our presentation.

This week we focused on writing the rough outline of our white paper. We split the paper into equal parts so that we could each have something to write about. I was to write about the second solution to the health care problem with the Knight Corporation. This solution included switching the plan from an HMO to a PPO. In all of the solutions that we came up with, we decided to offer a cafeteria plan with each. This will allow more flexibility within the company for the employees and also the employers.
