I found this reading to be straight to the point and the information to be useful. I feel like I already knew alot about the internet and using search engines, but knowing how to narrow down my searches is something new to me. I liked how the reading provided you with different activities to work through if you wanted to. I found the section on crafting your search very intereseting. I never realized that by just putting quotation marks around the phrase you are looking for, it can narrow down your search by thousands. I have never really put into thought how a search engine works. I never realized that the search engines put your results in an ordered list based on a particular site's popularity. I also found it interesting that some search engines allow advertisers to buy a higher ranking on the results list, which can make your search results unuseful. The other section of the reading that I found interesting was the part on Boolean searches. I have never heard of this kind of search tool before, but it sounds like it would be very useful. The Wildcard searches were also interesting because I can think of numerous times when I have not known how to spell a correct form of a word when using it in a search engine. The idea of the metasearch engine sounds like a good way of conducting searches to me because it sends your search words to other search engines, instead of just getting results from one search engine. Overall, I found this reading to be helpful for refining your searches and for figuring out if your online information is a valid source. I find myself running into the problem of finding valid sources all of the time. I feel like I obtain very useful information from the internet, but when I go to cite the source I feel like I don't have enough information to even cite it properly. I am glad that we took the time to read this excerpt because I think it will be useful information for all of us in the future when we are writing papers.

I completely agree. Even
I completely agree. Even though I had been using all the internet search engines for a while and feel like I know most everything I need already, this reading pointed out a lot of other points that I still am not aware of. I find this reading especially useful, for this is the kind of thing we can put into everyday use.
