Enough

Enough, directed by Michael Apted, is a story of a mother who is on the run from an abusive husband. Slim Hiller, played by Jennifer Lopez, is a struggling waitress who meets the man of her dreams while working at the local diner. After a short amount of time, Slim and Mitch get married and their life seems to be perfect. Five years later and after giving birth to their daughter Gracie, Slim finds out that her husband is having an affair. She often catches Mitch staying out late with other woman and lying about the situation. When Slim confronts her husband about the affair he slaps her and punches her in the face, knocking her to the ground. Mitch continues to beat Slim and put Gracie in danger until her friends take matters into their own hands. Slim and Gracie attempt to escape with the help of her previous boyfriend, Joe and her friends from the diner. Her husband and a gang of men pursue her relentlessly, finding her no matter where she goes. Slim goes to all walks to escape her abusive husband, even cutting her hair and changing her name. After Mitch attempts to kill Slim and their daughter multiple times, she goes to her last resort. Ginny, Slim’s best friend, takes care of Gracie while Slim is forced to fight back against her husband. With the help of her father’s money, she takes self defense lessons and becomes mentally and physically unbeatable. After setting Mitch up, they engage in a physical and psychological battle. Slim shows her husband that she has had enough by beating him and ending their marriage by killing him. In the final scene of the movie, Slim is seen holding hands with her former boyfriend, Joe. She realized that there really was something out there that was better for her. She ended her husband’s life, but gave herself and her daughter the opportunity to live again.
The film Enough is both a drama and thriller. The movie keeps the audience in suspense throughout and often makes the viewers jump in fear. Viewers never know what is going to happen next and it keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. It is powerful to watch a film about a woman that goes from running for her life to being strong enough to fight back in her own defense. Jennifer Lopez gives an amazing performance as an action hero in the movie. The movie was well directed by Michael Apted and well thought out to add to the suspense. Billy Campbell, known as Mitch, portrays the perfect psychotic and abusive husband. His dark personality and attitude makes his character believable. Tessa Allen, also known as Gracie, is simply an innocent child that plays the perfect role of being full of fear. All aspects of the film were nicely put together to keep the audience in suspense and on their toes.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and thought it was a great story of a woman’s strength and power. Slim wanted a better life for her child and for herself. Most women that are in abusive relationships live their lives in fear and never settle for anything better. They often don’t tell friends or family and most importantly they often don’t report it to law enforcement because they are scared. In Slim’s case, her husband had all the money in the world to keep himself out of jail and on the streets. I found the movie extremely moving because it shows that men don’t always have the strength and power over a woman. I also found the film interesting because I am researching what causes men to become abusive and what possesses them to want to harm the people they apparently love. Enough showed that women across the country should take stand and remove themselves from abusive and harmful relationships when they really have had enough.

Annotated Bibliography

Like everyone else, I loved the reading for today because it was so short! It was very helpful for me to have read this because I have never done an annotated bibliography before. It provided a very good explanation of what should be included and the example was helpful to get a feel for what an annotated bibliography is suppose to consist of. This will be very useful for me when writing my final research paper. The section about establishing your authority on the subject was also helpful because it is something that we are also talking about. People are going to believe what you are saying if you establish a really strong ethos and that is something that you must include when righting research papers. I thought this reading was very easy to read and straight to the point and I think it is going to be very helpful to me in the future.

Research

This reading was very useful because it got me thinking about our final research paper. I never would have thought about using these techniques in
order to find information about a topic. I found it the section about enerating keywords interesting because it is something that I would never
think to do. Defining key terms is really a good way to get you thinking about your topic and it also allows you to be knowledgable about your topic. I thought it was funny when I read the section about encyclopedias and the reading mentioned that Wikipedia is an excellent place to launch your reasearch because most teachers look down on Wikipedia. I found the section about keeping a research journal very helpful because I know that I often lose track of what research I have done in the past and where I have found things. I think that keeping notecards that have statistics on them or things you need to cite, with the source information on the back is extremely useful. I often will find important information for my research, but will forget what the website is called or forget what page it is on in a book. I thinking recording your work and information is a successful way to keep track of everything. Overall, I found that this reading was very helpful for me to get thinking about my research paper. It also had one more perk...it was short!! Smiling

Yeah!

For the first time in a long time, I remained interested in and thoroughly enjoyed this reading. I think one of the main reasons why I liked this reading was because it was a story of Sligh's true life. It was truely moving to read about her struggles throughout childhood. I also found it ridiculous that Clarissa's father told her that no one would want to marry her if she became too independent. In my eyes, independence is a good thing and it is what makes you who you are. I also found it very interesting that because her momma hated the life she lived, she in return wanted more for her daughter. It is kind of a motherly instinct to try to give their children a better life than they had. It was sad to hear Clarissa talk about all of the things that her black school lacked such as, a gymnasium, cafeteria, science lab, and library. These are all things that we take for granted on a day to day basis. It was heart-wrenching to hear her talk about how nervous she was to take part in the court case, especially after the lynching and the riot at the university. It was almost like she was having to live her life in fear everyday. It was difficult to read about the newspapers making Clarissa's story out to be something different then it really way because it was almost like I was fighting for her. I loved the last two paragraphs of the story because it threw you for a loop. I would have never expected to hear Clarissa say that she is now a photographer. But, at the same time it made me proud of her to hear that she wants to make photography into what it really should be.

Identity

So, I am going to start off by saying what everyone else has said. I thought that this reading was too long, wordy, and hard to follow. It was one of those passages that when I read a sentence, I had no idea what they were talking about and I almost had to re-read everything at least once to understand. I am almost positive that as a Freshman in college, I know what identity is and like I said I found this reading to be extremely hard to read. There were interesting points throughout the passage though. I enjoyed reading about what a "gist" is and how it is different from an essence, a definition, or a summary. I also thought that the section on "crabbiness" was amusing and added a little fun and humor, to a somewhat boring reading. Finally, I thought the section on How to Be a Harley Guy was interesting. I never realized that there was a strong connection between our identity and our means of getting from place to place. I enjoyed reading about the Harley Davidson bikes and the type of people who ride them. My uncle is a hard-working, professional businessman and he owns a Harley. It is interesting to hear that Harley owners are associated with Evel Knievel and Hell's Angels, when we all know this isn't necessarily true. Altogether, I found the reading to be full of too much unecessary information but at times interesting.

Revising, Editing, and Proofreading

I found this reading to be extremely useful, especially because we are working on a paper this week. It was short, easy to read, and straight to the point. The introduction was useful because it pointed out the actual differences between revising, editing, and proofreading. Like many others, I always used these terms interchangeably because I figured they all meant the same thing. I never realized that editing usually occurs when a work has already undergone deep revisions. I also found it interesting that when writing a paper you should step into the reader's experience so that you can ask yourself how your draft would be read. I found that the checklist about audience, purpose, and kairos was useful when working with my presidential candidate paper. Overall, I thought that this reading was helpful and easy to gain useful information from. I also think that it was appropriate to read this chapter at this time in the course because we are starting to write our bigger papers.

Speaking Ethos, Logos, and Pathos

I have to agree with alot of the other blog posts in that I found this reading to be boring and somewhat redundant. It seemed like the point they were trying to get at just dragged on throughout the article. It would have been more effective if it got straight to the point. I didn't enjoy the reading because like everyone else said, I feel like it is something that is forced into our heads throughout high school. Ethose, logos, and pathos is something that we strongly focuesed on in my high school speech class. I also find the topics to be common knowledge. Although I didn't enjoy reading this article, I did like the examples that they gave. I liked the example from the movie Bulworth where the senator begins to give his speeches in rap after having a nervous breakdown. At first, the audience thought he was crazy for being a rapping aginv white U.S. senator. But, as time went on the audience found him to be a confident and unique candidate. I also enjoyed reading the openings of the two speeches made by President Roosevelt and President Bush, during time of extreme nation tragedy. It was interesting to read something that is filled with so much emotion. The last thing that I enjoyed reading in this article was the section on song lyrics and grammar. In the song lyrics it didn't really matter if they were gramatically incorrect because it often made a strong point regardless. Overall, I feel like the topic of ethos, logos, and pathos is something that needs to be focused on in writing and public speaking. As for the reading, I feel like alot of us didn't enjoy because it is something we focused on in the past so many times.

Online Research

I found this reading to be straight to the point and the information to be useful. I feel like I already knew alot about the internet and using search engines, but knowing how to narrow down my searches is something new to me. I liked how the reading provided you with different activities to work through if you wanted to. I found the section on crafting your search very intereseting. I never realized that by just putting quotation marks around the phrase you are looking for, it can narrow down your search by thousands. I have never really put into thought how a search engine works. I never realized that the search engines put your results in an ordered list based on a particular site's popularity. I also found it interesting that some search engines allow advertisers to buy a higher ranking on the results list, which can make your search results unuseful. The other section of the reading that I found interesting was the part on Boolean searches. I have never heard of this kind of search tool before, but it sounds like it would be very useful. The Wildcard searches were also interesting because I can think of numerous times when I have not known how to spell a correct form of a word when using it in a search engine. The idea of the metasearch engine sounds like a good way of conducting searches to me because it sends your search words to other search engines, instead of just getting results from one search engine. Overall, I found this reading to be helpful for refining your searches and for figuring out if your online information is a valid source. I find myself running into the problem of finding valid sources all of the time. I feel like I obtain very useful information from the internet, but when I go to cite the source I feel like I don't have enough information to even cite it properly. I am glad that we took the time to read this excerpt because I think it will be useful information for all of us in the future when we are writing papers.

Irrelevant Information

After being confused about what reading we were supposed to do for today, I decided to just read this article just to be safe. I found it very interesting and I must say it kept my attention. I like how it separated the topics into different sections because in my eyes that keeps everything organized. I did find this reading to be irrelevant to what we have been discussing in class with the presidential candidates, but at the same time it is useful information. Guilt by association is something that you see all the time in the form of judgement, if someone's friends are a certain way than that person is automatically the same way. I really enjoyed the ad misericordiam because I can relate to it. It is something that I always used to use with my parents when I was younger. I gave them a story filled with pity, in order to get my way. I also liked the tu quoque, which means "you did it too." I don't know a person who hasn't used this technique in their everyday life. I know that I myself have used it in argument with my parents from time to time. For some reason, teens think that everything that they do is okay because at some point in time their parents probably took part in the same act as a child. As I have came to find out, that is not always true and using tu quoque usually just gets you in trouble. As for what we have been discussing in class, the presidential candidates are often found using many of these different techniques. Presidential candidates are often found using ad hominem, fallacy of opposition, ad misericordiam, ad populum, and red herring. Altogether I enjoyed the reading and found that it was useful information for all of us.
