White Paper: Teen Drinking and Alcoholism

Teenage drinking is becoming increasingly prevalent in our society today. This habit is usually simply brushed off as youthful indiscretions however, it is leading to problems such as alcoholism and depression later in life. It is also causing higher teen pregnancy rates and therefore higher welfare rates as these teens enter the "real" world. I think this topic would be a great idea for the white paper project because obviously underage drinking is a big issue here on campus.

Topic Proposal: Healthcare in the United States

The United States is one of the world’s few industrialized nations that does not guarantee healthcare. As a result many of our citizens live without it. We live in a nation where 15.6% of our populace does not have healthcare. In 2006 about 47 million people in the United States did not have healthcare.

Topic Proposal: Flier Pollution Around Purdue

As most of you are aware, there is an unusual pollutant that is always scattered around Purdue. Those fliers that are taped to the sidewalks around Purdue never get picked up, and end up just tearing up into little pieces and making the sidewalks and surrounding grass areas look polluted.

Topic Proposal: Adesa Auto Auction Multi-System Communication

The Adesa Indianapolis Auto Auction is a business that allows auto manufacturers to get their products to the car dealers who ultimately sell cars to you, the consumer. Adesa’s customers include Ford, GM, Chrysler, etc. The customers use Adesa’s facilities to auction their products, as well as their staff to provide the necessary auctioneers, auto drivers, car transportation services, title exchanges, and other necessary inventory and paperwork.

Topic Proposal: Co-rec Expansion

The co-rec at Purdue is nice and well organized but what it lacks is the size a campus of 40,000 kids should have. With all the money brought into Purdue by tuition and other fees, I believe it is very possible and should be a priority of Purdue to reward their students. Many students at Purdue do not go to the co-rec on the sole reason that it is always packed and crowded. This reason should not be a factor is our students' decisions not to go. I believe this problem could be solved and that Purdue should take more action in trying to do so.

Topic Proposal: Domestic Automobiles

My white paper proposal is "The Problem With Domestic Automobiles," and will deal with the current dilemma U.S. automakers face when competing in a market dominated by foreign brands, breathing life back into their trademark, and the (mis)steps that lead them to this quagmire.

Topic Proposal: Alternatives to Mountaintop Removal Mining

Mountaintop Removal is a fairly new form of mining. In this form of mining they basically remove the top of a mountain to reach a seam of coal. The extra soil is placed in nearby hollows, ravines or other low places. This technique is being used in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The problem with this type of mining is that it is very difficult on the local environment. In many cases local communities/ environments are damaged beyond repair.

Topic Proposal:Campus Safety

I think campus safety is a problem at Purdue. With a few attacks in the last couple of years, I don’t think we have enough enforcement personal. Especially with night classes and buildings being open late into the night, it becomes a safety hazard to walk home and needs to be fixed.

Topic Proposal: Over Population with Unwanted Animals

Lots of rescue places and humane societies are overcrowded with unwanted animals. Many people do not know the costs and responsibility that goes with owning a pet. If more people knew in the beginning what went into having a pet there would be less unwanted pets. Owners need to be aware of the consequences of dumping pets at humane societies and rescue centers. Getting information out to future pet owners would help with the overpopulation of pets.

Topic Proposal: Airport Congestion Pricing

Delays at airports resulting from over use continue to be an increasing problem. Often, airlines like to schedule their flights so they all leave and arrive at airports at the same time. Also, morning and evening rushes continue to cause delays all across the country. As a result, the FAA has tried a lot of plans to decrease the delays. These have included things such as flat out placing a cap on the number of flights an airport can have everyday. O'Hare is one of these airports, but as anyone from Chicago knows, there are still plenty of delays.
