For this week, there were only two readings: the Service Learning Project Description and Client Criteria. For the service learning project, I think that the instructions are very descriptive and straight forward. However, I think that the instructions are easier read than accomplished. Being who I am, I find this project a little daunting. I do not like asking people for things or approaching strangers. Therefore, it will be a lot outside of the box for me. Given this though, it will most likely benefit me by requiring me to push my limits and interact with people I would not on a normal basis. I do think that it would be more helpful for the English Department to have already set up clients. Also, how many years has this project been used? The number of not-for-profit organizations in the West Lafayette area can only be getting smaller.
The last reading, Client Criteria, pretty much just explains exactly what criteria our potential clients must meet. This reading helped me realize how our final grade could be dependent on the client we choose. In general, the client just needs to be willing to work with us. If they are a non-profit, I don’t think that there will be much of a problem having them work with us. A non-profit organization that is not willing to work with people seems counterproductive. Also, the criteria say, “potential clients should be interested in our services.” However, we are not allowed to contact the clients until approved. How are we supposed to know if they are interested if we are not allowed to contact them?
