My cover letter will be different from my resume because it won't cover quite as much. I will take the most important factors from my resume and highlight those. I will also add more detail to what I know will be important to my employer.
Outstanding 4-Her may not look particularly impressive to just anyone but to these people it raises a 'green' flag. It shows hard work and heavy involvement in Purdue's programs and for this internship in particular it has a lot of weight.
There are a lot of good things on my resume but they some things still rank higher than others. This internship is very different from others because usually you go to the place of employment and they interview you there and then hire you. With this one you are interviewed here on campus and then they will place me somewhere for this summer. I went and talked to the woman who is on the hiring committee and she used the word 'paraprofessional' and assured me that this meant that this internship is no secretarial position for summer help. I will be treated as a professional employee of Purdue and will work side by side with the Extension agents and not just getting their coffee. I highlighted this too in my cover letter and someone said that the word 'paraprofessional' sounded like I was trying too hard but she used the word so I think I can too.
I also highlighted my job from last summer. I was an intern and I created a needs assessment guide. This too may sound of little importance but it is another 'green flag' for Purdue's Extension program. They use community guides like this on a regular basis when creating their curricula for the programs they will do for the community. There are still a lot of things left on my resume that I don't address in my cover letter but it's not like they won't be looking at both pieces of paper AND my application so I'm not so concerned about what I left out.
