I feel that the paper “Junk Cover Letters Kill Good Resumes” was a great paper for the class to read. It added a lot of information on the subject of why you should focus just as much if not more on your cover letter than you do on your resume. The first point brought up in the article is the fact that about 40% of cover letters are never even read. The reason for this is that the cover letter is not made special for that situation which makes the reader not care for the letter, just as the writer apparently did not care for the reader. The next point brought up was to use the reader’s name. People like to see themselves mentioned in a cover letter because it shows that the writer cared enough to find out that information. The next point is to include specifics about the company, such as, their current fiscal situation or any problems they are facing. This is very important to have in your letter because it shows you have done your research on the company. The next two points work together because they involve using words that are easy to understand while at the same time using industry specific terms as well. The final point this paper makes is the fact that you should have as many different cover letters as you need for each type of job application. You should not have simply one cover letter that you use in all situations. These points are very helpful to me in making my cover letter in this project.
