I walked away from reading the “Rhetoric of the Job Application Letter” with much more knowledge and information about cover letters than I started with. These readings were somewhat dry, because there was not much room for the author to provide humor or any type of distraction to the material. It was purely informative, but the information was rich and very useful. It just took a while to get through all of the cover letter advice. I learned about how to format the cover letter, and I also learned about what type of material is acceptable to include in a cover letter and what types of information I should leave out. I think the biggest piece of useful information I gained was on tailoring the letter to the specific job. I have been reading about how the resume needs to be tailored, and now I know that the cover letter also needs to be tailored in the same way. Also, in the tips from Boise State, I learned that it is acceptable to “drop names” in a cover letter. I liked this reading because it was formatted well, and it outlined the main points in bold, so it was much easier to read, and it conveyed the information in a much more “reader friendly” way.
