The first reading entitled E-mail Guidelines focuses on the etiquette for professional e-mails. In it the guidelines provide rules which to follow that should be used when e-mailing, professors, recruiter, and anyone who is not on a personal level with the sender.
I personally found this information to be very helpful because in the past I have sent e-mails and worried if they were professional enough for the receiver. The receiver is someone to the nature of my professor or recruiter for an internship that I would like to hold.
Two of the guidelines that I realized that I have not been using are one, telling the reader of about my enclosed attachments, and two watching my use of pronouns. I admit that I have a problem with that.
Also the information about using correct greetings helped a lot with what I will use in future writings. I have had trouble in the past because I was not sure how to address people in my emails. I did not know if it was appropriate to say Mr. Last Name or simple use first names. Now I know that it is a matter of how well you know the person you are speaking with.
I really liked the reading about Job and Career Resources. Currently Krannert is going to soon have a spring career fair for the students. I plan to attend but in preparation for the event I will have to do research on the company in order to be ready.
Networking is a great piece of advice to anyone who would like to receive a job or an internship. The more people you know the better chances an individual has of getting that job. Every available resource should be utilized to get the job.
I don’t know if I agree with using those big sites such as career builder.com or monster.com. While they do compile a lot of information, they are susceptible to gimmick jobs and faulty advertisement. Getting wrapped up in one of those situations can cause a lot of wasted time. I would rather know the companies that I would like to be involved in specifically and then research them for openings on one of those sites.
