After reading the article Online Remark Can Now Sink Job Candidate, I was surprised to see how much impact online communities like Facebook and MySpace have outside the internet. I have heard stories before about employers checking these sites to have a better understanding of the individual they are hiring, but it really emphasizes the idea when you read an article like this. Employers have very little information when they have to make a decision about hiring people. Most people spend weeks editing their resumes before handing them in. This gives them plenty of time to write down only the good things. When the employers check these sites, they get a raw and unedited view into that person’s life and they get the whole image of the person, not only what they write on their resume. I am sure many people do not agree with what the employers are doing, but you have to look at it from their point of view. It is their responsibility to hire a qualified person that does not have a lifestyle which will conflict with the goals of the company. As students, we should be aware of what we are putting on the internet to be available for everyone to access. Our actions now can dictate what will happen to us for the rest of professional lives. The internet is available to almost anyone today, we have to be very careful what we put online.

I understand what you're saying but how people behave in college and how people behave after they have graduated can sometimes differ greatly. Therefore I do not think employers should use a college based website as part of their hiring process.
