I have written many texts and documents and adjusted the substance for a specific audience, but one experience in particular seems more significant than the rest. At my high school graduation, I gave a speech as the President of the student body and the Salutatorian of our senior class. I had included so many pieces of advice and quotations about the future that were, in my opinion, very important. While this guidance was valuable, I almost forgot to mention how we all came to that present point in our lives- how we grew to be such close friends, completed our assignments over the years, made memories both good and not so good, laughed, cried, matured and grew up. I needed to remember that my audience consisted of friends, and friends want to remember the stories, the humor, and the fun. After adjusting the tone and content of my speech, I truly felt as though I not only was able to pass on the advice, but also strike an emotional chord within my classmates. Without the evaluation of my audience, I do not believe that my speech would have been nearly as balanced or well-received.
