After reading the tips on oral presentations from PWO, I learned that giving a presentation has a lot to do with audience analysis. This point has been reinforced throughout the whole semester, but I think it is an important one. It is very important to distinguish how you see the audience, and more importantly, how you want them to see you and your presentation. The text gave an example contrasting speaking formally in a suit and speaking more informally dressed casually. The point was that neither one was wrong or right, but they are equally correct under different circumstances, which is why it is so important to analyze your audience before speaking to them. The next point was on talk structure. In this section, the author pointed out that there are some specific things that a speaker can do to enhance the presentation. Making a list was one of the points, and I believe that this could be the most important part of giving a presentation. I believe this, because at the minimum, even if you give a terrible speech, your audience at least knew what it was you were trying to say. Also, the text covered using understandable concepts and some other forms of talking like general to specific. In a general to specific manner, one speaks generally about a specific topic to enhance understanding before moving on to the specifics of the topic. This I also believe is a good strategy to use. Finally, the text covered supplementary materials to be used in presentations. I believe that visual aids can be a great facilitator of learning and understanding during a speech. Graphs, charts, pictures, and other things can be used to enhance a presentation. The only issue is to make sure that the images actually support the material and are useful for the presentation. Also, these images need to be clear and easy to understand.
