For our service learning project my group and I have decided to take existing flyers that almost home humane society uses to educate and inform their clients. The flyers were basically a couple paragraphs on a plain white sheet of paper, no pictures, special fonts, bolding or anything to catch the readers attention. The reading that I felt was of great use to our project was the brochure and flyer powerpoint presentation. The reading says: Use photographs to tell your story,Use a delicate hand, Don’t make unrealistic claims and Organize your page with boxes and borders, all of which our group has been focusing on when re-doing the current flyers. Adding pictures to go along with the text can really be helpful in catching the readers attention. The article says, "You can scan your own photographs, grab photos online, or buy stock photographs already in electronic form." We used a combination of our own photographs and ones we found online. We also took in to consideration the layout for our new flyers and although we want to catch the readers attention we still kept the layout simple, which the reading said is important. We kept the flyers very organized with clean, straight lines, with very little clutter. We didn't want to take away from the information presented, but add to it instead. The article says that good designs don't have to be complicated and our group definitely took that in to consideration. We used important relevant information and deleted any unnecessary parts, making sure that our flyers are as straight forward as possible. One of the most important points I took from the article is, "The body of your flyer doesn't have to be filled with text. White space invites your readers to see what you're promoting without long, boring blocks of text (that probably will be ignored)." The original documents were that of several paragraphs thrown together with no pictures on a simple white background. They did nothing to grasp the attention of the reader. We took this in to consideration when creating new flyers and realized that there were other ways to get the information across to the reader without overloading them with unnecessary text. Altogether the brochure and flyer article was of great use and really helped our team create our new documents.
