This week’s reading assignments were three different sections within PWOnline reading. The first assignment was all about “Copyright, Plagiarism, and Fair Use of Others’ Writing.” This piece talked about the ethical and legal issues involved with professional writing. It states that you always need to give credit for any work that you include in your writing that you borrowed from others. Also, you need to be willing to share all of your work to help further research on varying topics. The legal end of this article mostly talks about copywriting and how it can be used. This article also mentions issues concerning academic honesty and electronic sources. This next assigned reading assignment is about gender in the workplace. This article was very interesting and made me think about a lot of the stereotypes revolving around women that I have grown up with. A lot of progress has been made for women since the 1950’s but as this article shows, it is still a major issue in today’s society. This is shown by the fact that women still earn less than men and they do not hold as many leadership positions in the business world. At the end of this article it mentions ways to help stop the spread of stereotyping, which include avoiding sexism and watching your language. The final assigned section from PWOnline is titled “Ethics Editing Checklist.” This section simply mentions some of the obligations that writers have when creating a document. It states several questions that you should ask yourself before, during, and after writing your document. If you follow this checklist of questions you should be able to stay out of any type of trouble involved with plagiarism or other legal issues.
