This week we did not have a lot of readings, though the ones we did look at were very relevant to where we’re at in the third project. On Monday, we discussed the reading about proposals, and how to write one based on the goal you’re trying to accomplish. This was important to look at before we really got going on the project, because we would need to make sure we stated what we wanted to do in a convincing way that was tailored our specific needs. This reading was long, but it was nice to break it up in class and really go over it. My group focused on the third part about types and contexts of proposals. This part talked about how there are two different kinds of proposals people make – one is when you are trying to say why you are the best candidate for the job, and the other to say that you are calling someone to action. In the first scenario, which we are not doing in this project, the solicitor already knows there is a problem or situation, and is asking for someone to come help. In the second situation, which we are doing in our third project, the applicant is saying that there is a problem, describing it, and saying what they want to do to help fix it. The second reading we had this week was the same one from the second project we worked on, about memos. It was from OWL and was a refresher on how to write an effective memo. My group found that it was easier and went much faster for us when writing this memo as compared to the first time we did it, for the white paper project. We were able to get our ideas down rather quickly, and were already familiar with the layout and content to be included. I’m hoping in the coming weeks that we have more readings about relating to clients that we are trying to serve, because I know it can be hard to try to connect with business people. I hope that this project expands my horizons in that regard.
