ENGL 420: Business Writing

This weeks reading started with a powerpoint going over brochures and flyers. This powerpoint was very helpful when it came to making the flyer for the group project. Some of the things that it said where good to do where using pictures, don't make unrealistic claims, also to use borders on the flyer, and to establish a center of attention. Along with those things it says to align the text with photos and logos and to us symbols wherever possible. Using these things helped me come up with the flyer that we are using.

This week ended up to be a good one, much was accomplished. To start off with we where unsure if we would be able to get our proposal in on time because of our schedules not lining up with the blood centers. We were however able to meet with them briefly and turn in our proposal. This week we where able to meet with the a second time as well. In our two meetings we sat down and discussed a few different things. The first thing we talked about was if the blood center had any form of marketing. They said that the did have events that they promoted, but could us some help.

The majority of this week's readings had to do with plagiarism. We where presented with three different types of cases having to do with this. What I believe these readings where trying to convey was that plagiarism can happen to anyone, even well know authors. The readings where also trying to bring up the fact that not everyone knows that they are copying someone else's work and they stressed that you must site your sources in your paper. Other readings this week talked about ethics. These articles talked about having your writing be for good, not harm.

This week there was a good amount of readings and even a video to watch. To me the most helpful reading was the one over proposals on PWOnline. More specifically the part that helped me the most was to see the example that was put on there. This example showed our group how to set up the proposal along with some things that we want to do with our proposal like being specific like this one did along with giving a solid background and introduction. We also decided, by seeing this one, that we need to put it in a language that everyone will understand.

This weeks readings mainly consisteted of reading about proposals. The readings explained that a proposal was something that proposed a course of action. The overview of a proposal taught us what to use a proposal for. The articles also explained that the main goal for the proposal is to convince the audience of the value, significance and overall meaning of your project. Another artical that we read explained what was included in a proposal. The parts included are the main body, evidence, and tables, visuals, and graphics. The last article we read was that of a sample proposal.

After doing some thinking about possible Clients for our final project I have come up with what I believe will be a good one. For this project we will be working for a small business. I would like to work with the Levee Health and Fitness to better develop their advertising. We would be able to make a brochure and come up with a marketing campaign. I believe this is a good idea because whenever I am at the Levee Health and Fitness it never seems to be busy and we all know how much everyone complains about the Co-Rec.

The only reading this week was to read the description of the next project that is due. This next project is called the Client-based student learning project. This project seems to be fairly interesting and more interactive than the other ones. I believe this project will also be more challenging then the last two. I know there are plenty of organizations out there in the Lafayette area that will meet the requirements for this project, but I have yet to come up with any ideas. For this project our same group has decided to stick together, which I believe will be a benefit to us.

This weeks reading showed us how to put together a good presentation for the white paper. They also showed us things not to do. These powerpoint examples will be very beneficial when it comes time to produce the presentation. We also saw another example of a white paper. This was able to give me ideas on how to format it. It showed what not to do and also what to do. We also attended a presentation on photoshop and Microsoft Publisher. I learned a few things in this presentation, but overall not as much as I would have hoped to have learned.
