Week 12 - Rhetorical and Document Design Issues

I have chosen to use the document about the kiln by Coen to review the selection and presentation of data as it applies to rhetorical and design issues. Overall I thought the document addressed the issues involved with rhetorical and document design, but there are some specifics that after considering the issues stand out.
When it comes to the five principles of design, I thought this document did a pretty good job overall. Each page felt balanced, but I think that having the page split on the binding edge created a bit of an off kilter look. With the large, detailed pictures though, the document gets away with this without messing up the balance too much. Both sides of the pages are well balanced though, as can be seen on page 1 and 2 where there are images on the lower section of the pages, with information above them. The pages do not have a bottom border to match the top border which takes a bit away from the balance. The document is also well aligned, with a clear hierarchy using different sized fonts, bullet points, and paragraphs. The grouping of the document is well done with all the information above or around graphics referring to the graphics themselves to help support the information. In terms of consistency the document does a pretty good job, but on close inspection I feel like the lack of an orange text on page 3 and 4 for their high level hierarchy structure detracts a little from the consistency. The contrast I notice mostly was in the pictures where the different pictures tend to be quite different, ranging from drawings to actual pictures.
For rhetoric, I focused mainly on the images included in the document. For the image guidelines, I felt the document did a good job following them. None of the images are expected to tell a simple story, but are always reinforced with text. They are never left alone to speak on their own. In terms of ethical use of images, none of the pictures really had information they could display that was falsified. As for the fourth guideline, I felt they did an excellent job. The best example of this is the large image on page 3 and 4 about the adjustable kiln burner. The image is large and well placed in the middle with informational text surrounding it. In addition, they also have the image labeled in several places. This document definitely did a great job in its image placement and design.
Again, overall I felt the document met the issues of document design and rhetoric well using images and well designed information giving the document a professional feel with lots of information.
