Project Log: White Paper

1st week

We are negotiating between topics: Gaming and OpenOpen office. Because one of our teammates is not present, we have decided gaming would be a good choice for us. Our research could be playing open source games and commenting on how they compare to proprietary games. This research would most likely lead to slacking off and not getting the paper done. Once we talk to our final group member, we can decide if we want to actually make this venture or not.

2nd week

We have chosen the OpenOffice Suite to compare to Microsoft Office. Because one of our group members has done their quick guide on one the the OpenOffice programs, we should have a good jump on beginning research and a main part of the body of our paper.

We have begun to research the OpenOffice suite

3rd week

Research continues, this time more refined as to what. I have personally narrowed my research down to the available source code. I believe this will be a good subject and advantage for the OpenOffice arguement. A couple really good internet sites, including blogs, detail the source code benefit as well as the downfalls of the open source system.

 4th week

We got an extension on the draft of the white paper because a group member will not respond to emails and will not attend class. I understand how busy a person can be with college, but answering emails is quite different. At least give us a heads up. I have since written my part of the first draft. It's pretty solid and well researched. I love myself.

 5th week

Once the comments on the first draft were returned to us, I realized we had a lot to do. I need to add screen shots and examples into my section, and make small grammatical changes, but other than that, it's a good section of material. I am pleased. With the small amount of time the introduction and conclusions writers had to prepare their material, I understand why it is a bit flimsy. Better luck next time I hope.

6th week

First graded draft returned: B-, not acceptable. I wish my group members would spend more time on their sections. My section was the only one that did not need to be completely revised. I will advise anyone who needs help, but I feel the small revisions for myself are a payoff for the hard work I put in toward the beginning of this project. Thank god, because I have senior design to worry about.

Final

We have revised this document several times, the second grade was a B+, still not acceptable. I need an A in this course to obtain my 4.0 and get the job I want. We have now divided up the history section, which needed the most work into sections to each work on them. Scott will put them together...I hope we can get an A.
