Use of Visuals

Discuss at least two kinds of visuals that you plan to incorporate into
Draft 2 of your white paper. What kinds of information will be presented? How
will these visuals communicate information in ways that text might not be able
to handle as effectively? How will these visuals enhance your target audience's
understanding of the issues you address within your white paper?

Having heard the discussion on the use of visual presented in class,
our group decided that given our topic and information, we would most likely be
incorporating several visuals that involved presentation of numerical
data.  Because our project involves helping small businesses decide
whether or not incorporating OSS
into their systems would be beneficial, we figured that presenting statistical
data for other companies that have already incorporated such programs in the
form of either a case study, or something similar, would be helpful.  With
this, it is quite possible that we will have visuals in the form of bar charts,
line graphs, or pie charts.  For example, we are hoping to include a
visual that outlines the cost of proprietary software over time for a small
business versus the long term costs of OSS
usage over time.  This would most likely be presented in the form of a
line graph showing the trends over time.  We are also considering a visual
that outlines what kinds of software are generally used by different
enterprises.  Because this data is presented in a manner than involves percentages
of use of certain programs, we believe that this data would be best presented
in the form of a pie chart.

Because of the nature of visuals, it is possible to present a vast amount of
statistical data in a condensed form that is easy for the reader to
comprehend.  If this information was instead presented purely in written
text, that text would be dense and difficult to present in a manner that helped
the reader gain access to and remember the data.  We believe that by
presenting our examples for our paper and our statistical information to back
up our points in the form of visuals, we will make this data more accessible
and helpful to the readers.   This will likely enhance the overall
understanding of the target audience of the topic presented within our white
paper.

Cool

Those graphics sound like they would be awesome for your project. Were you guys able to find them? I know that I tried to find some line and bar charts dealing with trends of cell phone usage and OSS usage as well, but I was unable to find anything current.
