Project Log

Project Log one:  Summary of work for weeks 7 and 8

The first few weeks our group worked on choosing a topic of interest to
everyone in the group, and then doing background research to come to a better understanding
of what that topic entailed.  We decided that the majority of the group
would be most interested in finding out more about how open source technologies
are affecting the business world.

We decided that it would be most interesting to look at this topic
from a very broad perspective, taking a look at the overarching benefits of
open source technologies for businesses, as well as some of the
detractions.  We decided, after some discussion and research, that we
would take the position within our paper than suggests open source technologies
as a good alternative for businesses.  This was because it seemed to us
that the benefits of OS far outweighed the negative aspects.

We then proceeded to prepare a proposal, attempting to make clear that
we intend our main audience to be peoples looking to find out more about how
open source technologies can be used within business.  These peoples may
be looking for this information for a variety of reasons.  Some may be
attempting to start a business, and therefore need cost-effective alternatives
to expensive software packages and licenses.  Others may perhaps be
looking at ways to keep up with competing companies, such as Microsoft has had
to do with regards to the open source movement.  Others still may be
looking at ways to improve upon their current business proceedings by finding
more efficient, effective, or usable software, often times needing a higher
level of maneuverability or adaptability within their programs.  We
believe that our paper will provide general information to a variety of groups
that are doing research into OSS with the intention of possibly implementing it
within their business.  We hope to provide them with both the pros and
cons of such actions, allowing them the information necessary to make an
informed decision that will help the future of their business.

Overall, our group seems to be fine so far.  There is a general lack of
motivation to actually complete the assigned tasks and some difficulty actually
setting up meeting times out of class due to conflicting schedules.  Other
than that, we seem to be doing fine.
