Reading Response Two

Writing in the workspace is quite different from writing in college. The primary reason for this is that in college, the professor does not have a vested interest in understanding your work. When a professsor reads a paper, he or she will grade it for clarity, etc, but not to actually use the paper. In the workspace, someone must actually understand a peice; style takes a backseat to meaning.

Of course, many times in college, the reader does have a vested interest in your work. Writing research summaries for professors requires a very different style of writing from a typical english class. While college writing requires you to write well, it does not place the onus upon the reader. In this sense, college writing is like a one way street ... the writer creates content but there is no interested reader, just a grader. In th workspace the content itself isn't as important, but the street becomes two way. Other people from a variety of backgrounds must be able to understand your work.

As i was reading your response, I noticed that you said that in college papers are "one-way streets".  I have noticed that in my classes the papers that we write are usually two way, because the teacher interacts with us about our papers and the way everything flows. Also with graduate students doing research, the Prof. has a great interest and use for the papers that the students are writing. I can see where you are coming from that you will say that college writing is a one-way street, but I think you should be more careful in generalizing your statements like that.

workplace vs college

I think you are right that it is a little more of a one way street,
but I also think that the professor tries to look at the paper from the
intended audience’s point of view. It also depends on the professor to, so I don’t
think you can say it is always a one way street in college, and a two way
street in the working world. Come to think about it, it could also depend on
what the subject the author is writing about.

I'm Neutral

I agree with zjohnson on the fact that professors really do care about what is being written. On the other hand, I also agree with what you were saying. It seemed like my professors never really cared what I was writing about simply because it seemed like the only things being written on my papers were about coherence, grammer, or something of that sort. When you were talking about various audiences in your last sentence, college written papers can be considered to have a variety or backgrounds as well. This is true when papers are passed around to get other student's perspectives. Because of this, there are different backgrounds reading your paper.
