How to Not Suck: Gareth's tips

Reading through Gareth's article "Gareth's Tips on Sucks-Less Writing" I came across several good points. First off, I really liked the "Apply Occam's Razor" tip. I believe that this is really a good thing to keep in mind while writing. I have found in my own writing that after I have been working on something for a while, I start looking over obvious (and less obvious) mistakes that are easily fixable. This could be spelling errors, bad grammar, or chains of thought that do not make any sense. By going back after lying off of it for a while, you are able to spot all of these problems.

Another one I am glad that he pointed out important spelling and grammar are. I know that I try hard to make my sentences grammatically correct and even though I am not the best speller I always try my hardest and use spellcheck if I am on a computer. It really bothers me when I read something that has grammatical errors. It leads me to question the writer's abilities when they are considered "professional."

One thing I did not agree with was the point "Know How to Get In and Get Out." I realize that good introductions and conclusions are very important but it seems that he is really downplaying the importance of all the words in between. You could have an excellent conclusion but if people get bored reading the words before it, they aren't going to get to the conclusion. I have experienced this in at least two books that I can think of right now that had amazing introductions but started to slowly decline in quality afterwards. It got to the point where it just lost my interest. I realize that he is talking more about articles but the idea still remains.
